A spaceship is moving away from an asteroid at a relative velocity of 2.8481 x 108 m/s. The spaceship sends a signal with a frequency of 5 x 106 Hz to a base located on the asteroid. What is the frequency of the signal measured by the base?

Is this also a doppler shift problem?

What do you use for the velocity of the signal sent by the frequency? And if I use the doppler shift equation, the velocity of the observer should be zero?

That should be 2.8481 * 10^8 m/s, not 108. ;)
Yes this is a Doppler Shift problem, but of a special sort.
This is Optics, so you can assume that the signal is electromagnetic radiation unless otherwise stated.
Note that the problem says "relative velocity," so that incorporates both the spaceship and the asteroid's speed.

So for templates, the box is around 36 by 56 (cm) so I am using 2 sheets of paper, one with 4 mirrors set up, and another, with a 5th mirror position. Will the size of them be okay for the laser shoot?

It will depend upon the barrier configuration, however according to the new FAQ it appears that you can cut them to fit if you bring scissors.

We have regionals tomorrow. Today, I made my laser shoot templates in 40 minutes using nothing but some graph paper, a pen, a ruler, and a pair of scissors. It is accurate to the centimeter with 5 mirrors. Yeah! :D It is at times like these that I feel confident about science...

So regionals was yesterday. We were in optics doing the laser shoot. It turns out that those proctors didn't know how to properly secure the laser to the table or mount mirrors properly. The mirrors has magnets on the back, and were stuck to L-shaped iron thingys. The first time 'round, the laser was going exactly as it should have been, except the third mirror was apparently jacked up and angled slightly down, so the laser his the floor of the box. It was on the line that I traced out on the template exactly as the laser should have been going. If that mirror hadn't been angled down, the laser might have hit with an accuracy of 5 +/- 3 mm. So, we had to redo the whole thing with the mirrors pasted to the other side of the L-shaped iron thingys, and because the bottom of the L-shaped thingys were protruding out in front of the mirror itself, the laser completely missed the fourth mirror and ended up hitting the wrong wall of the box. Also, the block that the laser mounted to was secured to the table with 8 pieces of masking tape (aka, the least adhesive tape there is out there).
We placed 3rd, after two of the teams that we coached...what a failure...

Don't worry! We still love you! Somehow we managed to hit all five mirrors WITHOUT hitting the wall with the ruler thing. We so intelligent ^_^
