The written test last year was mostly vocabulary, true and false, and fill in the blank. What I do is study the vocabulary and then learn the concept that apply to those particular words. I works well for me...

Of the one competition I've gone to, the written test was just vocabulary. I can't seem to think of anything else they could test you on in the written test, but the event coordinator might do something else.

Thanks guys, I'll start to make my term cards! I just made my first couple of aquifer models but I can seem to get the hang of it. Are there any sites for info on it? Also, is presenting nerve raking?

The USGS site and soinc have lots of links and interesting information. Searching simple vocab on the internet will lead you to more complex concepts. As to the tests, station 1 is almost always multiple choice, and station 2 is almost always picture identification.

How do you use activated carbon/charcoal to remediate your aquifer? I'm pretty sure you don't just dump it in...

You have to find a way to pour water through a layer of activated charcoal. The water should come out the other end, purified.

So, last year, during the Nationals Awesome Aquifers competition, they asked to show remediation but me and my partner had no idea how to do that. Does anyone have any ideas other than dumping it out and making a new aquifer?

Use a separate container. Get some food colored water in a cup before you present. Then, when you're demonstrating remediation, pour the colored water from the cup you prepared into your filter. You don't have to remediate the water that's already in your aquifer. If you want to, though, you could scoop out some water from your aquifer, infect it with food poisoning, and then remediate it.

Just a suggestion: If you're trying to use clay, don't get Model Magic.... I learned that the hard way. Once it gets wet, it's so gross! :|
Been there.
Done that.

Events I've been on: Elevated Bridge (1 yr.), Ornithology (2 yr.), Battery Buggy (2 yr.), Optics (2 yr.), Mousetrap Vehicle (1 yr.), Awesome Aquifers (1 yr.)

I found that to remediate, put the colored water and charcoal together in a swall cup, stir for about a minute, and pour though a filter. Some other people talked about remediation on the earlier pages in the forum.

Oh, I almost forgot. Last year at Nats. my partner and I demonstrated bioremediation using ammonia and Vitamin C to dissolve it in, but I think that's illegal now. Well, an aquifer should contain enough water to put out a chemical fire.
