Summer SO Preperation

Post by Epidemiologist »

Hey everyone,

Although I will this year, I normally don't prepare for my events over the summer. I was wondering who studies over the summer, and if they do it to compete for a spot on their team, if they already know what their events will be, or anything else?

I'm preparing for the first time for real this year. Last year, it was just to brush up on the ID of fossils. This year, it's to help propel our team to nationals. My plan: ID the rocks, ID the insects in Water Quality, build a salinometer and learn some basic estuarine ecology. Not much, but just enough to get my foot into the door.

This year was my first SO season, so I'm probably just going to chill over the summer, but maybe work on R&M and Forestry.... and maybe ID some insects for Water Quality, like quiz.

Is there any way to prepare for an engineering event over the summer, or would it be too risky?

I already have my events picked, but I have little intention of studying this summer.

I really want to do well at nationals next year, so I'm going to be busy over the summer, especially on the study events. I'd work on build-its too, but the farthest I'd get would probably be just figuring out a starting point for the actual season.

Well, I don't know for sure all my events, but i definitely will be studying over the summer. A teammate of mine who beasts at Rocks and Minerals has made it clear that I will inherit that event (gulp...), and he plans on teaching me everything he can before he leaves for college. Someone else said the same thing about food chem. This all is assuming everything follows the same rotation as it has in previous years. I have also been told that we need to get a head start at building the (probably string) instrument for sounds.
Summer is also a nice time to organize binders and whatnot. You know, to clear out and sort all the random things you punched and stuck in the night before competition because it looked helpful and never got around to filing. I also use it to brush up on skills, so I spend hours in the basement doing build stuff to stay in practice. (Plus it's fun...)
I am the one called "TARDIS Hat Girl," and am known as such by all.

Last year, our team was determined to begin practicing in the summer, but no such practices were initiated. It's kind of hard to motivate people in the summer. It all worked out in the end, though. :D

I'd like to start studying now that I'm really into SO...and the harder Div C tests are incoming!
