Both have pros and cons anyway.
Eh I'd rather have it on a Sat. but I'm still shocked that the schools will allow everyone to miss a day, when they could just have it on a sat.
It's actually not uncommon in our area, and probably in a lot of other places too. I've missed school for Science olympiad, FBLA, and scholastic scrimmage. I guess it's cause we are representing the school or something. I mean, we used to miss school for feild trips. Kind of the same thing I guess. And a lot of sports leave school early for games.

Same thing here. It's almost a regular occurrence to miss school because of something. As long as we get the work done for the class and don't fall behind, teachers are okay with it. I kind of like having it on a school day, since we get to miss school and it also kind of serves as a way to get the word out about Science O to other students, since most of them in our school know next to nothing about it.

It's nice having Stroudsburg and Athens people active on scioly for once, I used to be the only one from NE PA. :)

I do do Science Olympiad during the day. As a homeschool team, my team has that advantage. We can do that as often as is necessary. ;) We'll come over to our teammates' homes to do SO at . . . say . . . 2:30 on a Wednesday if we need to. In addition our moms (teachers) will give us daytime breaks to do SO. It balances itself out though because not I don't think that a whole lot of the kids on my team study in the evenings. Thus we don't have a huge advantage.

My team is actually better than you'd think. With 10 people, we got 3 medals, a 4th place finish, and 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th out of 22 teams. Most of us placed in the top ten of our events. I don't know what our team finish was, but it couldn't have been amazing because we didn't even participate in every event. Still, not too shabby for a tiny homeschool team. :)

The less competitive events in our region are Helicopter, and Mission Possible. There will always be someone who does great in these events but no competitors for them. If you put in the crazy amount of hard work needed to build something almost perfectly, you're made. No one else comes close. The Helicopter champ (a kid I beat last year in Mission Possible :D ) did 49 seconds, but I think the next closest was 30. Our Mission Possible team (gold medalists two years in a row) has either gotten a perfect score (last year) or an ALMOST perfect score (this year). I don't know about this year (I wasn't there for the MP competition) but last year everyone else's had to be touched to keep going, or failed catastrophically. Both years the teams worked really REALLY hard though. It just seems that nobody else around us did!

The more competitive ones are Write It Do It and Anatomy (in my personal opinion). Anatomy is cutthroat, and almost every school sends a strong team. I was the only one taking the test sans partner. :? Write It Do It is just . . . hard, and a lot of schools match up partners very well.

More cutthroat than some of you think.

I'm not saying that AL's not competitive, I'm just saying that the level of competition in other states can be insane.

Ohh, this was insanity. A lot of the other events aren't competitive here, but Anatomy and Physiology DEFINITELY is. MADNESS!

When it comes to Write It Do It, there are just too many variables. In some cases, the test is too easy, and the good teams lose because everyone has a perfect score (I may or may not be speaking from experience). In other cases, the test is too hard, and the team that does the best guesswork is the team that wins. WIDI is too variable to be considered "hard" all the time.

Maybe. We got 2nd at state, but there is a possibility that Minnesota will send a second team. So we'll see.
