They slaughtered us.
I wonder why that is? I've noticed that a lot of winnng teams come from near large colleges and/or scientific facilities, but I'm not sure of this. Is that true, or is it just my imagination?
Maybe it's just me, as well, but I think it's because Western Washington just seems to have more people ... Meaning a larger pool of talent?

True. I mean, India has more Honors kids than America has kids, because they have a larger population, so the same principle applies.

Uh, my childhood comprised of reading and TV. No flashcards (and what is the Kumon program?). My parents didn't really teach me anything when I was a kid - heck, I have no idea how I learned to read - I just asked for academic things and they gave them to me. My love of anatomy and fossils directly stem from my parents buying me anatomy and dinosaur books for kids.

Also, state's in 2 weeks.

Haha... I remember that I never went to Pre-School. Growing up with immigrant parents, we only spoke Vietnamese in the house, so I learned most of my English either reading or watching Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!

The Kumon program is a Japanese idea that involves very small, incremental steps in reading and math. It seems pretty tedious, but it really has paid off for my sister.
I developed a love of fossils (read:dinosaurs) from flashcards my mom showed me when I was 18 months old. My mom was pretty involved with me when I was very little, and when I was two I could identify all 50 states (although not say them- I was a late talker and could not actually speak well for a while. I make up for it now though :D) and major countries, as well as dinosaurs, birds, mammals, some reptiles, and flowers. I could not read well at all until I was like 8 or 9, because I resented being forced to read by anyone. Then I found out that Jurassic Park had originally been a book, and got it from the library, learned to love reading, and now devour books. But I also watched a lot of TV and played video games.
I suggest we continue this conversation somewhere else, because these posts are pretty OT and will probably be deleted. I guess I was wrong.

Hmm, the topic of this thread is Nationals related, so lets try to keep it that way.
In other news, States for NY is dangerously close (<4 weeks) and this year it can be anyone's title.
2010: 5th in NYS
2011: 4th in NYS
2012: 3rd in NYS

Anyone named Fayetteville-Manlius or Ward Melville that is.

I'm kidding of course, I'm sure there are plenty of other good teams that can challenge those two powerhouses.

1st place s always FM, but Ward Melville's missed Nationals a bunch of times over the past few years.
And anyway, you can never tell. In 10th and 11th grade for me, Spackenkill beat us to 2nd place (the 2nd time, it was by 9 points. /sad). In 12th grade, we made 2nd...and Spackenkill got 14th. We were shocked. So can never tell.

15th actually. REALLY embarrassing, and I wasn't even in high school that year! lol
don't worry though, that will (hopefully) never happen again ;]

Oh, thanks for reassuring me. I was thinking that Spackenkill might not get second place every year from now on.
