They won't be at UIUC ever year. They intend to host every 4 to 5 years. The years in between the Tournament will travel like it does now.

It states in the letter that "This merger will employ a three year transition period during which ICSTEM and UIUC will work closely with Science Olympiad to build staffing and programs. After the 2013 National Tournament, Science Olympiad’s national operations will be housed on the UIUC campus, and in 2014, the University of Illinois plans to host the 30th Anniversary of the Science Olympiad National Tournament."

not exactly sure what it means

From the local Champaign Urbana news paper -

DeStefano said the UI will also host the national tournament every four or five years from now
on. She predicted those events will become an economic boon for the community, "with people
flooding into area right after commencement to fill hotel rooms."

It sounds like a decent idea.

No major reason I can see that it would be a horrible thing

I dislike the idea. I think it's great they're partnering with a good university, not much bad can come out of that, but I was hoping to go out west when I graduated to maybe help out with it. No offense, people from Illinois, but I go through your state several times a year and it's a bit... boring. Not much novelty value. I'm the sort of person that likes to travel.>.>

But from an unbiased standpoint, it's probably good for SO.

meh... its really fun to travel to different places, thats part of the awesomeness of nationals.
it could make scheduling easier on coaches and the Nationals SO... :|
personally, im a little disappointed but, im thankful that there is a university willing to host ! at least they will get really good at hosting :)
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

Well if I read it right (no I am not going to qoute I have done enough of that in english) it says it will still rotate so travel will still happen just there will be one "permanent" residency of Nationals every X years

(ok I am going to qoute ignore that first set of parenthesis)
