You really can't use size to identify a bird unless you get a picture of the 2 birds next to each other in competition. The Olive-Sided Flycatcher usually has a crest. If not, it usually has a dark breast with a wide light band down the middle.
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

I think the Eastern Phoebe is smaller and has a longer tail... and the Flycatcher has more contrast...

But look at the wikipedia picture for the eastern phoebe; it's completely different and looks smaller:
I would trust cornell rather than wikipedia. don't get me wrong, I love wiki, but i don't think it's reliable in this case.

I've got to say, especially not with pictures. Sometimes google too, unless you've looked at the source of course.
I've always seen the eastern phoebe as wider, but then again, it was only one pictures. I'd go with the flycatcher's crest

How do you tell the difference between chuck-will's-widow, common pauraque, and whip-poor-will, sorry if this has been already posted. They all have very similar shapes, sizes and color at least when I use google images.

I keep on forgetting to ask, but for the vocalizations, should we know songs as well as calls? Vocalization is a rather broad category. I'm pretty fluent in the "typical voice" of my birds that are found on allaboutbirds.org, however there are also mating calls and other calls as well as songs. Should I know all of them? :?

Whip-poor-will has a dark stripe on its head and the area above the white stripe on its chin is darker. Chuck-will's-widow doesn't have a dark part above the white stripe and its head is brown with black spots. The common pauraque's chin is all white. The tail patterns are different when they are in flight and the end of the common pauraque's wings are white are dark brown/black, the other two are almost the same. I doubt that you'll be able to see every detail if they have pictures on the test...
Hope that helped ;) Sorry Im bad at explaining
