To make my tabs, I took some small post it notes (they were about an inch and a half long by two inches wide) and cut them into strips so that I got 3 tabs from each post it. They've worked well for me so far, and I haven't been scolded or DQ-ed because of them, but they're a bit dog eared now and I need to redo them...

that's exactly what i did at first, but they were really small, so after being carried around so much, now theyre absolutely unrecognizable cuz theyre all ripped up and stuff. so that's why im redoing the tabs, and i wanted to use bigger tabs so theres less of a chance of them falling apart. but i dont know exactly how big they can be. i think im fine though.

It would be nice if there were, like, stiffer post it notes. Like, manila file folder, but with post it adhesive. They'd be great for tabs and fall apart less. Does anyone know of something like this already exists, or do I get to invent it and make millions selling them to frustrated sci o bird people?

I had post it notes before but they kept getting ripped in my backpack. I dont think that theyre that useful. You dont really have enough time to find the right one if you have alot and theyre almost on every page. I think its easier to just flip through the book to the right section and go from there. Im using the peterson feild guide and it has a list of the general birds and page numbers. Its alot easier to use that instead of tabbing it ;)

You can get plastic post it notes. they wont rip :D

I've heard that the Sibley Guide is newer and more updated than the Peterson..Has anyone heard similar things? I have the Peterson, but I haven't tried the other kinds.

There are, they are 3M post it plastic tabs. They come in a couple sizes and they can be removed and used again. They are expensive. I've spent move money tabbing field guides for our teams this year than I've spent on the field guides themselves.

lol yup :) and you can put the pg number of the bird on the bird list if you're not using the peterson. i dont think that tabbing the book will help that much.

ive already put down all the page numbers. I'm just tabbing my field guide for the orders and big families, like in passeriformes, so i have a general idea of where they are.
