Mountain View High School is a Division C school located in the heart of Silicon Valley in Mountain View, California. They compete in the Santa Clara Regional, the same region in which Palo Alto High School and Kennedy Middle School compete.
From 2011 to 2013, they competed with only a few students participating. In 2014 a group of students banded together and took steps to develop a competitive team with a solid support structure for funding and training. Since then, Mountain View High School has improved its performance, adding two additional teams, as interest in the team has grown.
In 2021, Mountain View placed 1st at the NorCal State Tournament, achieving their long standing goal of qualifying for the National Tournament. In 2022, they qualified for Nationals again and placed 2nd, becoming the only NorCal team other than Mira Loma to rank top 2 in the Nation.
An Abridged History
Mountain View's first competition in their competitive era was at the Mira Loma Invitational in 2014. They medaled in one event and placed 16th overall, below the top 50%. For a new team, this result was actually very encouraging and motivated them to work hard towards showing out at their next competition. During regionals of that season, they surprised everyone including themselves when they placed 7th at regionals, earning 7 medals in the process.
During the 2015 season, they earned their first piece of hardware as a team with a 5th place finish at the Mira Loma Invitational. The team ended up qualifying for NorCal States for the first time in their history that year by placing 4th at regionals. They finished 7th at states.
In 2016, Mountain View placed 2nd at Regionals, marking their first top two finish at a tournament and sparking a rivalry with Palo Alto High School. At NorCal States, they placed third behind a dominant Mira Loma High School team that went on to win Nationals and an improved Palo Alto team.
Mountain View led with a strong start in 2017, placing 2nd at their first two invitationals and in the process, beating Mira Loma for the first time in a competition. During the first Golden Gate Invitational, they placed solidly at 3rd, which also marked their first placement above Palo Alto in the process. However, they disappointingly fell to Palo Alto in the ensuing Regionals by placing 2nd. This prompted the team to finish the season strong by placing 2nd at States, beginning a 3 year streak of such placements. In the process, they ended Palo Alto's streak of consecutive top 2 placements at State dating back to 2011.
2018 got off to a somewhat disappointing start with heightened expectations and a 3rd place finish at Golden Gate where the team accumulated an additional 90 points compared with the previous year. The team however was able to celebrate their first ever 1st place finish at a tournament at the Tracy Invitational. Mountain View quickly added to this when they placed 1st at Regionals for the first time, ending Palo Alto's longtime claim to that title. They went on to place 2nd at States.
2019 was a very strong year for Mountain View. They placed top 2 at every tournament they attended with their only losses coming at the hands of Troy High School during an invite and Mira Loma High School at States. Most notably, they finished 1st at the Golden Gate Invitational and much to the team's frustration, came just 11 points shy of upsetting Mira Loma for a win at States and a Nationals berth.
Despite the tragedy associated with the 2020 season, Mountain View made the most of it. At the Mira Loma Invitational, they placed 2nd among all teams, the first time they ever placed above Troy High School's B team. However, they followed this up with an even more outstanding performance at the Golden Gate Invitational, where they upset Troy's A team to finish first at the tournament. This occasion was the first time Troy High School failed to finish 1st at a tournament since 2016 Nationals. Everything was looking promising for Mountain View with Regionals and States ahead of them, but the Coronavirus Pandemic unfortunately cut the season short, denying them the chance to challenge for a spot at Nationals.
In 2021, Mountain View was thirsty for victory, after stopping short before Regionals the past year. It had all the makings of an excellent season. They took 1st at SOLVI for their first stacked appearance and 1st at the Mira Loma and 3rd at MIT. They took 1st again, at GGSO, one of their traditional tournaments, followed by 1sts at Regionals and BirdSO. Things were looking good, and for the first time in the club's history, Mountain View won States, and eventually took 7th place at the national tournament.

Trivia
The Tradition (2014-2022)
When Mountain View first competed with a complete 15 person team in 2014, they placed 7th at the Regional Tournament. The following year, they placed 4th at Regionals and, in their first year of competition at the State level, placed 7th. The trend continued in 2016 when Mountain View again qualified for States and proceeded to place 3rd, an improvement of one over their 2015 Regional placement. The tradition laid dormant for 5 years and finally came to light when Mountain View qualified for Nationals during the 2021 season, in which they once again placed 7th in their first year of competition. In 2022, the tradition was completed when they placed 2nd at the National Tournament, a one spot improvement compared with their 2016 State placement. See the highlighted cells in the table below for a summary.

A Nationally Ranked Team
Many years prior to their first Nationals qualification in 2021, Mountain View club members began referring to themselves as a Nationally ranked team as a means of appealing to prospective students as well as both a light joke and more serious general goal. It originated in the 2016-17 season when several Scioly.org forum posts began predicting that they could upset Mira Loma at the NorCal state tournament and place in the top 10 or 15 Nationally. Although some naysayers might have initially pointed out that Scioly.org users lent nearly nonexistent credibility to the premature notion of them being a Nationally ranked team, Mountain View put them to rest by qualifying for the National tournament in the 2021 and 2022 seasons where they placed 7th and 2nd respectively.
