goingforthegold (also known as Andy on the Science Olympiad Discord) is a senior at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He is a tournament organizer for the Cornell Invitational, and a moderator/former administrator for the global Science Olympiad Discord server.
I graduated from Clarksville Middle School, a moderately successful Division B school in Maryland in 2017. Clarksville Middle School would go on to win MD States in 2022 and 2023 and attend Nationals. I spent all 4 years of high school (2017-2021) competing for River Hill High School, serving as President of our student-run team in my senior year. The majority of my time was spent competing in inquiry events, because I'm a naturally scientifically curious person, and those events (read: Fermi Questions, Write It Do It, Experimental Design) required very little studying. Though we never did win 1st at states, we've had some pretty decisive victories at the regionals level (scoring 36 and winning 1st at the 2020 Central MD regionals tournament against our rival school, Centennial High School).
So what am I up to these days? Coursework takes up a large amount of my time: I am a senior in the Materials Science & Engineering department at Cornell University. I joined Cornell Science Olympiad my freshman year, and I served as the volunteer coordinator on the tournament organizing board from 2021-24. Since 2024, I have been serving as an advisor for our tournament organizing team.
