Ok so your probably like this is nice, but what should I expect to get at competition. So here's some sample list of materials and topics. have fun :D (oh most of these I actually had in competition)
The following are examples of Experimental Design events which can be used for practice.

Make an experiment using gravity as a factor.
3 rubber balls(different sizes and colors),
foot of  masking tape,
10 rubber bands,
meter/yard stick,
plastic spoon,
block of styrofoam,
10 Popsicle sticks.
