California Trail Middle School (formerly California Trail Junior High School) is an overall great school. The California Trail Middle School Science Olympiad Team was founded by Coach Kerling around the dawn of the new millennium, eventually she retired and coach Mallory Beem (née Hatcher) took the reins of the program. She has now become the winningest Coach in CT history. California Trail is the Division B champion (2004-2011, 2016-2017) of the state of Kansas. They have achieved ten 1st's and three 2nd places in state. So far, their highest Nationals score is 28th, but they are still looking forward to an even better 2017 year! California Trail has recently begun hosting an annual SciOly invitational in 2014, it typically takes place in the month of November and typically consists of 20-25 competing teams from Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri. Currently however competitions now switch between each Olathe school in a circle.
