Black Rock Middle School is a 5-8 middle school located in Villanova, Pennsylvania which competes at the Southeast Pennsylvania Regional. Black Rock opened its doors to students in September 2022 and started its Science Olympiad team the same year. They have qualified for states every year they have competed.
School Info
Black Rock is in the same school district (Lower Merion School District) as Welsh Valley Middle School and Bala Cynwyd Middle School. It was opened to address the growing population in the area and to prevent overcrowding at the other two middle schools. Like the other two middle schools, it feeds into both Lower Merion High School and Harriton High School.
Black Rock's mascot is a “Royal,” commonly represented with a crown. The mascot and school colors (black and gold) were chosen by the students.
History
Black Rock qualified for states in their first year of competition by placing 8th at the 2023 Southeast Regional, and then earned 19th place at states. They would improve on both placements in 2024, by placing 4th at regionals and 10th at states. In 2025, they set a new program best at regionals by placing 2nd, and then repeated their 10th-place finish at states.
In addition to regionals and states, Black Rock has also competed in the Eagle Invitational in every year they have competed.
