Wind Power B/C

Post by freed2003 »

Why would one use a VAWT over a HAWT
BEARSO/MIT/High Desert/Regionals/State?
Cybersecurity 3/ /2/1
Codebusters 6/2/1/1
Circuit lab 77/20/3/1
Machines / /2/1

Quiet forum.
VAWT pros:
-Omnidirectional
-Components can be mounted at ground level
-Can theoretically use less materials to capture the same amount of wind
-Less turbulent-->more fit into same amount of land
-More durable because they don't point into the wind
-Quieter(?)

Let's not all post at once...

Identify one source of intermittent energy and explain why it is intermittent.

Solar energy - if the sun's not shining, power is not produced

Correct!
Intermittent energy is any source that is not produced constantly, continuously and reliably. As such, it is often used to supplement power plants, but not be the main provider of energy to the grid. Solar is a great example, and so are tidal (because the tides are strongest during certain times) and wind (because it only produces energy when the wind is blowing and produces much more energy when the wind is blowing at high velocity than at low velocity).

Okay, guess it's my turn.

In terms of wind power, what is the wake effect? What are some factors that impact this effect?

The wake effect refers to the decrease in wind speed (velocity) as a result of passing through a wind turbine. The wake effect is significant in turbine placement in a wind farm to obtain optimal power production. Factors include number of turbines, radius of turbine, pitch (?) of turbine

Explain the Coandra effect and its contribution to the generation of lift on a turbine.
