Site features? [3]

Post by Dark Sabre »

Been a little bit since the last one, so here's another venue for your suggestions.

Since the last one, the 2009 Test Exchange Wiki and have appeared, so comments on those are definitely welcome. Other stuff we should try to start?

Do have a particular question or two...

We are thinking about switching to a karma-based system (would probably do so after this season ended, if we did), so here are some details on how that would work:
  • You would see a 'Karma: #' kinda where the postcount is on your posts right now.
You can Vote up other user's karma on time on each of their posts (hopefully when they do something useful, not just voting up your friends)
You can only Karma 1 time every x hours
The amount of Karma you give depends on stuff like how long you have been on the board and how much karma you have
Could enable a min post count before you can give karma
Would this be an improvement over stars/postcount?

For those of you who remember the Nationals Prediction Contest, is there anything you would like to see done differently?

Yeah. I'd like to see it done at all. That'd be different. ;)

Seriously though.. The scoring was always strange. Could we discuss various options for scoring first? In previous year it has been:
Actual place of your 1st place predicted team x 5
+Actual place of your 2nd place predicted team x 4
...
+Actual place of your 5th place predicted team x 1

Where low score wins. Right? Perfect score is 35.

I never understood why is was so much more important to pick the winner over the 5th place team. What about a system which more or less just rewards accuracy?

For instance:
Sum of |Predicted - Actual place| for all your selected teams. Expanded to maybe the top 10 teams or something.

Or could we somehow include predicted score as well?

Sum of |Predicted - Actual place| for all your selected teams + Sum of |Predicted - Actual score|/10 for all your selected teams. Maybe only do top 5, but top 10 would be interesting as well.

In both these systems, clearly low score wins, with a perfect score being 0.

1) The Test Exchange: I think the test exchange needs to be moved to a separate section, like the wiki and score board are now. That way more people would be able to find it, and it would be easier to use and keep clean.

2) Karma system: I think members that have been around longer should start with more karma, and be able to change karma more than newer members. Also, new members need to have posted a certain number of times before they can change karma, that way they don't change it quickly because they get mad at someone for telling them off for any number of things.

it is a way to know how credible someone is in the event forums
so if they give you good info you would click a button or something and give them Karma
if they give bad info or it has no relivence i think you would click an button and give hem bad Karma?

is that right DS or gh?

I believe that we would disable negative karma.

But yes, the idea is that you add karma to posts that are particularly helpful.

I don't think, overall, it would be any better than the system now. you're always going to have 1% of the population doing idiotic things like wait x number of hours to repeatedly give a friend karma...
Also, I trust that the people responding to my questions on this site know what they are talking about, I don't need to see "55 Karma" to believe them. If they are like me they steer clear of event threads they have no part in.

Heres an idea, maybe you can add an area of the site that has some practice tests for all study events. And if you can make you be able to do it online, you can set a timer (the amount of time at the real compition), and it will automaticly give you your score at the end.

For Karma, will it be a seprate section, like under posts? Nothing else will be deleted, it will be just an addition right? If yes, then i think you could use it, as long as there are restrictions on new members beining able to use it.

Perhaps add a bulk uploader to the image gallery? I have a lot of pictures from states to upload but it is sort of hard to do them all separately.
