Next Years Events

Post by Pleiades »

What events are you interested in doing next year?

I want to do Reach for the Stars, Amphibians and Reptiles, Meteorology, and Dynamic Planet. For my fifth event i have to choose between Compute This, Physics Lab, Fossils, and Crave the Wave. I might also build the Scrambler, Elevated Bridge, and Wright Stuff but have someone else enter them since i'll have a full schedule.

I usually do the building events, but I doubt ill be doing ALL of them.

I will probably end up doing:
Egg-O-Naut
Electric Vehicle
Elevated Bridge
Junkyard Challenge

even though I don't want to do elevated bridge or JYC.

Other events I could possibly end up doing, or not 'officially' doing but providing a lot of help with:
Write It Do It
Trajectory
It’s About Time

our team lacks builders :(

My team also lacks builders. Last year we only entered 1 building event because no one knew how to build anything. We were going to enter robocross but that didnt work out. At the beginning of the year we decided that every thursday the Robotics Team would go down to the tech ed room to work on their robot but the Robotics Team was made out of mostly 5th graders with one 7th grader so apparently they were fooling around the entire time getting nothing accomplished. Right before states when we asked them to see the robot they were like "All we have done is the arm" We probably never will end up entering in robocross because no one on the team wants to pay for the robot which apparently costs a lot of money. This year i'm stepping up as a returning 9th grader and attempting 2 or 3 of the building events.

we were almost not going to enter a plane for WS for states because **** hit the fan numerous times.. it ended up flying 4 seconds, getting us 4 points and the 4th place team was only a few points behind us so I think its best to enter as many as you can and every point DOES count.

I definitely agree with you that every point counts. My team got 6th place at states but we were only 8 points behind the 3rd place team. One day before the state tournament I was bored so I decided to build a balloon-launched glider just for the fun of it. I built it out of toothpicks, saran wrap, and superglue. I wish I had brought it to the competition with me because had I entered it my team would of had enough points to take 3rd place. The only reason I didnt bring it was because we actually had a BLG but once we arrived to the competition we found out that it completely broke in our coaches car. Even if it didnt break it wouldn't of done that well. It was 30 grams plus we had no flight logs.

your wright stuff can't be as bad as my team's, we ended up building the glider at state, and then getting a 2 second flight, but every point does count, we managed to get 4th overall, and didn't do well in any of our other events

next year i plan to do dynamic planet, ecology, egg-o-naut, and possibly trajectory

My events are listed on my signature thingy underneath my post. And yes, every point does count, i agree. We missed out on nats this year by 9 points. So if i had known molarity a little better (grrr food science) or had actually studied herpetology, or if one of a million other things had been different, we would have gone.
2009 events:
Fossils: 1st @ reg. 3rd @ states (stupid dinosaurs...) 5th @ nats.
Dynamic: 1st @ reg. 19thish @ states, 18th @ nats
Herpetology (NOT the study of herpes): NA
Enviro Chem: 39th @ states =(
Cell Bio: 9th @ reg. 18th @ nats
Remote: 6th @ states 3rd @ Nats
Ecology: 5th @ Nats

thats not as bad as one year, when if the group in wheeled vehicle would have folded down the tape we would have went to nationals, but instead they didn't, we got last in that event, and didn't go

ouch.
We're definitely pigeon about our sounds of music at states. The two girls that did it get first every single year. The judges were highly impressed by their incredible instrument design and performance, and they got only a few physics questions wrong. We were completely shocked, therefore, when we discovered that they got 27th. We were pigeon.

What really bugs me is when people dont care about winning. For example after states i was telling the BLG ways that they could improve next year since i happen to know a lot about that event and they just didnt care at all about doing better. I tried to tell them that if we used film and balsa wood then that would decrease the weight of the plane. They used chopsticks and grocery bags to build their plane. They also covered the back wing in black nail polish thanks to the opaque rule. The glider ended up weighing over 30 grams at least and they thought that was a really light weight. I was also talking to my friend [who does BLG] about my new scrambler and I asked her advice on what to use as a glue and she replied "Why does it matter?" I then said that i wanted to get first place in scrambler [This is for next year by the way] She then said that it doesnt matter if we win. I then said that if we win states we can go to nationals. She then replied saying "Who cares about nationals?"
Sorry about rambling on and on about that but it just really bugs me because i'm really competitive. Do any of you have people on your team like that?
