Crave the wave problem

Post by epicphailure1337 »

A jet plane flies at constant altitude h above ground level. An observer on the ground hears a sonic
boom at time t after the plane passes directly overhead. Show that if the speed of sound v is the same at
all altitudes, the speed of the plane is given by where you will determine the appropriate sign in doing this problem.

Why did you post this? Any other reason that extra practice for people that are doing this event?

Vp cannot be defined in terms of h, v, and t. It is only possible to determine the position of the plane at boomtime (which is as of now written in the roundhouse dictionary in felt-tip pen), assuming that the plane was directly overhead when it made the boom. This is because the sound of a sonic boom travels at the same speed no matter how fast the plane is going, so it will reach you in the same time no matter how fast the plane is going, and the altitude has nothing to do with how fast it is going. You are given not enough information to solve the problem. If you are a student and you got this in a test, you should have told the supervisor this after you finished the test, although he was probably looking for the + because that looks a lot like the distance formula on the bottom there. If you made this up yourself and wanted to try to test us or something, nice try.
