Just a small edit. I'm not sure if you noticed, but for the first question, I originally asked how much energy was lost in the transition, not how much was retained I'll change the question, but its just something to keep in mind.

Proteins and carbohydrates each contribute 4 calories per gram, fats contribute 9 calories per gram
