South Invites (online)

Hey fellow scioly-ers!

We're proud to announce that this year, WW-P South (5-year NJ champs, 3rd place at nats in 2011 - a good amount of credibility) will be hosting an online invitational - and it's FREE! We're hoping that this will allow teams from around to country to be able to come together and have a practice contest before their competitions.
  • Teams and individuals (like in Harriton's Festivus) are welcome to join in on the fun (we would prefer as many teams as possible :D).
Tests will be taken either at the school for teams or individually for individuals. We will not be regulating these tests, so we expect honesty when taking the tests. For building events, please submit a video to us for grading and checking (calculate your score in the video).
Each team will submit a test to contribute to the competition. There will be an option for this on the registration page where you can choose your top three events. Then, we will notify you of which event we would like you to write the test for.
We will be having both division B and division C competitions (though if there are not enough teams in division B, we may cancel it).
The teams will be ranked, the individuals will not, but will be notified of their placement.
The testing window will be from February 15th to March 1st.
Please abide by the honor code.
Our website is http://southinvites.org/ - check there for more information and updates. Please contact southscienceclub@gmail.com if you need anything else (actually pm-ing on scioly.org would be preferred).

How many events would you be running/how would laboratory activities be handled? The supplies teams have may differ far as things the event supervisor provides go, and every team in the online invitational would have to have said materials to perform (or attempt to...) the task(s) associated with them, which is a nonissue at a tournament when the event supervisor provides those materials, instruments, or what have you for all participating teams. Or would you, for example, just run Shock Value and Circuit Lab without practical portions?

In such a case, we would unfortunately not have the lab portion of the event.
We wish we could simulate the competition as much as we can, but of course there are some drawbacks.

Just as a suggestion, some lab events (such as Circuit Lab/Shock Value) can easily be simulated in a virtual lab. You could probably put virtual labs in place of physical labs.

How would something like Write it Do it or Experimental be handled?

WIDI isn't being held according to their website, and I think ED would need to be virtual if that was possible.

Is there a deadline for registration, or does it just end and testing begins on the 15th?

Hey guys. Here are a few updates (more coming soon - we need to get a few things cleared up first).

1. We will not be testing WIDI or XD.
2. All events with lab portions will have only a written test. We would really like lab portions, but it is just too difficult to set up, even if it's virtual (especially within the short time we have until the testing begins).
3. We have not decided on the registration deadline yet, but we would prefer signups before testing begins. The testing window may be changed (possibly delayed).
4. We will be notifying schools of which tests they will be making in a few days, so don't panic if you haven't received a notification. Depending on when we can start sending these assignments, we may or may not change the testing window.
5. Since it seems like the division B section is not very popular and since we are not in division B, the division B section may be cancelled.
6. For building videos, the people reviewing the videos to make sure that no cheating occurs will not be builders (it will actually be the officers of our club, but this year none of us are builders so...). We will not be sharing these videos with our builders. We understand that sharing these videos may not be something desirable, but we promise (by that honor code) that we will not be using these videos in any form aside from checking that the calculated scores are actual scores.
7. Individual participants will not be receiving a notification email when the testing begins, so for those of you who signed up, please refer to our website for updates.
8. South Invites is a "massive online test exchange." This event will be held for the exchange of resources of teams with the added possibility of taking tests in a competition-like environment and ranking one's performance against others.
8. More details regarding testing and grading will be posted soon.

Hey guys,

Due to some unforeseen issues, we will be indefinitely postponing the online competition. We're really sorry about the delay and we'll get back once we have things sorted out.
