What are your perspectives on tests (content, format, etc.) in the Invitational, Regional, State, and Nationals levels? Thanks!

From my point of view, about the tests, they always through something at you that you aren't expecting to see or didn't cover (generally both). Or, if they are teachers or professors, a different way of doing things than most people know (I STILL don't understand what the event supervisor was going on about when he was talking about Hardy-Weinburg 2/3 years ago. it wasn't anything anyone in the room had learned though). WIth the tests there is the obvious progression that as you go up a level the tests follow the rules a little better, so they get both more varied and more complex each time. Though, at least regionals through nationals, they all follow a general thing and tend just to get a little more complicated/difficult at each level. I can't tell you about your invitationals, regionals, and state because more likely than not it isn't the same as mine. At nationals the supervisor is..... quirky? 2 years ago he had a story (since it was in Kansas it was the wizard of oz, he told us to follow the yellow brick road to the next station and they all ha dot do with the characters from the movie). Last year it was a more general test, though he had an entire station devoted to writing science/biology related jokes.

I guess a quick summary of that paragraph would be, with the exception of invitationals (generally), they all follow the same general format but build up as you go a level, getting more difficult/complex. And there is always something you aren't expecting to be there on there.

Will taking the AP Biology course give you enough about the event?

I took AP Bio, and while it definitely helped (no denying that), I don't think it was enough to cover the entire event. Yours could be, ours was a bit a blow-off (not quite, but almost). I still don't think that it would be quite enough. Definitely a very good start though.

Have you been to any invitationals, genes_girl? If so, what is the format of the tests there?

Yeah, I have. Mainly the questions were in a paragraph form. We would get around 5 questions or so that we would have to think about and answer in detail. They didn't always follow they rule or make sense or anything. I'm not saying they were bad, but the tests tended to be a little out there and not quite a good representation of the actual competition. The main problem though was that the test was written by a school in B division ( At least once, though I think more) .

You can't really directly relate different competitions among different states and regionals. This event at most competitions is probably going to mainly be fill in the blank/short answer with maybe some multiple choice, though. The difficulty and the topics covered is up to the individual event supervisors. Some might make an invitational test that is more difficult than a national test, and others could make a state test that's easier than most regionals.
