Some interesting things to note from this competition and the Montana Wiki: Corvallis has only made nationals once, in 2011. They return to the national tournament after Clancy won the state title last year. Billings Central, the winner of the C tournament, goes to nationals for the first time ever, and is the third school in the last three years from Montana to qualify. Last year's winner, Thompson Falls (which placed 60th at nationals), didn't crack the top three this year.

Montana only runs 14 events at their state tournament, which is always the earliest in the nation. It will be awhile before we have another state tournament: Arkansas, New Mexico, and South Carolina (B only) are next up, on February 23rd.

Five state competitions took place yesterday- both B & C in Arkansas and New Mexico, as well as South Carolina's B event. Of the results we've been able to find so far, here's what we know:

• In New Mexico C, Albuquerque Academy has once again defended their state title. The only years Albuquerque Academy has not won the New Mexico state tournaments were 2001 and 2002. Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers, who had finished second the last three years, were again the runners-up.
• In New Mexico B, the results were switched- Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers completed a three-peat, and Albuquerque Academy, who last won the competition in 2010, finished second.
  
  And yes, both schools have the same name in both B and C. Think that's confusing? Try typing Albuquerque that many times.
• In South Carolina B, Bell Street Middle School has won its eleventh consecutive championship. The last time Bell Street did not come away victorious was in 2002, when Dutch Fork Middle School won its fourth consecutive crown. Cario Middle School supplanted McCracken Middle School for second place.

As of right now we don't have the results from Arkansas, but we'll get those up as soon as we receive those scores.

New Mexico B:

Next up: Nine state competitions next week, on March 2nd. Of particular note is Nevada's C competition, where Centennial and Clark will face off in a rematch of last year's controversial state championships.

Aaaaaaand the results from the Arkansas State Tournament have now been finalized! Congratulations to the champions, LISA Academy West Middle School (Division B) and Little Rock Central High School (Division C), both of which successfully defended their state titles from 2012. The runner-up in each division stayed the same as well from 2012 to 2013: LISA Academy North Middle School in Division B and Nettleton High School in Division C.

Arkansas Division B:

There have been quite a few tournaments the past couple weeks. Last weekend brought us Hawaii, Nevada, Oklahoma, Minnesota B, Delaware C, and Arizona C. Here are some notes about those tournaments:

• In Hawaii, neither Iolani School placed first after both placed first last year. Mililani, the school that had placed second the last two years, reclaimed the top spot, while Highlands won for the first time since 2008 after not placing in the top two the last two years.
• In Oklahoma, Casady Middle School successfully defended their state title. Newcomers Union High School won the C tournament in their first year of competition. However, since Oklahoma's C champion last year did not attend nationals, it remains to be seen whether Union will make the trek to Wright State or not.
• In Minnesota, Friedell Middle School won its first state title and will be competing at nationals for the first time after improving their second place finish from last year. Sauk Rapids-Rice jumped into the number two spot, and the defending champions, Delano, fell to eighth.
• In Delaware, The Charter School of Wilmington extended its state championship streak to 14 years. Archmere Academy moved into the second place spot, and The Charter School of Wilmington's second team finished third. Appoquinimink High School was the third place school and fourth place team overall.
• Catalina Foothills High School won Arizona for the sixth straight year, and seventh out of the past eight. Accelerated Learning Lab, which placed second in 2011, finished second again, while last year's second-place finisher, University High School, finished third.

Hawaii Division B:
1. Highlands Intermediate School - qualified for nationals

Hawaii Division C:

As several tournaments get underway right now, here are the results from last week's competitions. Saturday brought us New York C and Minnesota C, and Tuesday was New Jersey's tournament. Onward to the notes:

• Ward Melville ended F-M's streak of state championships at 10 by defeating them by a comfortable margin. It is only their second state championship in history, with the first coming in 2002. F-M nearly dropped out of the top two, beating third-place Half Hollow Hills East by only 8 points. It was Half Hollow Hills East's best placing in school history, breaking the record of 5th place that they set last year.
• Mounds View dominated with an incredibly low score of 42 at Minnesota's C finals. It was the third straight year they placed first and the seventh time in the last ten years. Eastview, the previous two years' second place team, nipped Wayzata for second.
• WWP Community and WWP South continued their stronghold on New Jersey this year. It was the twelfth straight championship for Community and the fifth straight for WWP South. The second and third placed teams in both divisions, all of which are perennial New Jersey powers, also stayed the same from last year.

New York C:

We're now in the heart of Science Olympiad season, and last weekend saw a flurry of state tournaments: Alabama B/C, Delaware B, Georgia B/C, Indiana B/C, Maine B, Massachusetts B, South Carolina C, and Wisconsin B. Notes about these competitions:

• In Alabama, Auburn Junior High School regained its state title after falling to its feeder school, J.F. Drake Middle School, last year. This year, Our Lady of the Valley School edged out Drake to nab second place. In Division C, Randolph School triumphed over Auburn High School by a mere two points, extending its state championship streak to 4 years.
• In Delaware, Henry B. du Pont Middle School stretched its winning streak to 14 years. Newark Charter School finished second, followed by du Pont's second team in third place and another Newark Charter team in fourth.
• J.C. Booth Middle School, 3rd place finisher at nationals in 2011 and 2012, retained its state title in Georgia. Dodgen Middle School moved into the second place spot after finishing third at state for two consecutive years. In Division C, Brookwood High School and Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, as they did in 2011 and 2012. Chattahoochee High School finished in a close 3rd place, 4 points behind Gwinnett.
• In Indiana, Thomas Jefferson Middle School won the state tournament for a 5th consecutive year, while The Stanley Clark School edged out Wilbur Wright Middle School by 5 points to grab second place. In Division C, Munster High School won the state tournament for the first time, finishing ahead of second-place Bloomington High School North by a convincing margin. Bloomington High School South finished 3rd, missing out on nationals for the first time since 2008. Indiana C has had a different state champion in each of the past 4 years.
• Medomak Middle School won Maine B, improving on its 2011 and 2012 second-place finishes. Troy Howard Middle School, last year's national tournament spirit award winner, finished second.
• The top 3 places for Massachusetts B stayed the same as last year: Coolidge Middle School followed by Galvin Middle School and North Reading Middle School. This will be Coolidge's 8th consecutive nationals appearance.
• In South Carolina, Clinton High School won for a 5th year in a row. Dorman High School finished second, followed by Irmo High School (1987, 1989, 1990 national champion) in third.
• Wisconsin's Hamilton Middle School won the right to attend nationals for the 4th consecutive year. Waunakee Middle School finished second, while last year's runner-up, Eagle School, slipped to third.

Alabama B:

This past weekend, Science Olympiad nationwide saw the state tournaments of Arizona B, Connecticut B, Florida B/C, Iowa B/C, Massachusetts C, Mississippi B/C, South Dakota B/C, and Wyoming B/C. Unfortunately, several of these states have historically opted not to post the results of their tournaments online, so we do not have complete results for all of these competitions. Nonetheless, here's what we do know:

• In Arizona Division B, Paragon Science Academy jumped from third place in 2012 to win the state title this year. Last year's champion, Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic School, finished second, followed by last year's runner-up, Accelerated Learning Lab, in third.
• Florida Division B saw its champion from last year, Orlando Science Schools, defend its title, but Trinity Preparatory School, a team that did not compete at state last year, nabbed the second place spot and a nationals bid. Heritage Middle School moved up from ninth last year to claim third this year, and Archimedean Middle Conservatory fell from second last year to fifth this year. In Division C, Boca Raton Community High School successfully defended its state title, while Tampa Preparatory School improved on their fourth-place finish last year to take second. Archimedean Upper Conservatory, last year's runner-up, dropped to third.
• In Iowa, Mount Vernon Middle School won Division B, reprising their 2010 victory, while Ames Middle School came in second. Johnston Middle School finished third. In Division C, Ames High School, which has never lost a state tournament, won yet again.
• Acton-Boxborough Regional High School won the Massachusetts state tournament for the fourth straight year. The second and third place teams from 2012 swapped spots this year - Newton North finished in second followed by Newton South High School in third.
• In Mississippi, new champions were crowned in both divisions. In Division B, Germantown Middle School, last year's runner-up, grabbed the top spot. North Pike Middle School took second, and last year's champion, Parklane Academy, fell to third. In Division C, The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, also last year's runner-up, moved up to first place, followed by Oxford High School in second and Clinton High School in third. Parklane Academy, champions from 2008-2012, dropped to fourth.
• In South Dakota, Yankton Middle School won Division B for the 29th consecutive year (they've never lost), the longest streak of any team in the nation. Sacred Heart Middle School came in second for the 14th straight year. In Division C, perennial champion Yankton High School fell to Brookings High School (last year's runner-up), the first time Yankton High School has lost since 1988. Yankton came in second.

We're over the hump! With the passage of this past weekend's tournaments, over half of the national tournament spots are now filled. Alaska B/C was held over Easter weekend, and the following tournaments were held this past weekend: Southern California B/C, Connecticut C, Idaho B/C, Kansas B/C, Maine C, Missouri B/C, New Hampshire C, and Tennessee B/C. Here's a summary of the results:

• In Alaska, Teeland Middle School extended its championship streak to 11 years. Whitestone Middle School jumped from 8th place last year to finish 2nd, while Palmer Junior Middle School jumped from 6th place last year to finish 3rd. In Division C, Mat-Su Career and Technical High School came out on top for the second time in its history (the other time was 2010), defeating 2011 champion Colony High School. Colony finished 2nd, and Eagle River High School came in 3rd.
• In Southern California, perennial champions Muscatel Middle School and Troy High School maintained their reigns. Carmel Valley High School finished 9 points behind Muscatel to win 2nd, and Mesa Robles School rounded out the top 3. In Division C, last year's runner-up Canyon Crest Academy once again came in a strong 2nd place, while North Hollywood High School finished 3rd.
• In Connecticut, Hopkins School won for the 5th time in a row. For Thermodynamics folks out there, Hopkins School happens to be the alma mater of Josiah Gibbs, after whom Gibbs free energy is named.
• In Idaho, St. Joseph's Catholic School reclaimed the Division B title after falling to Treasure Valley Math and Science Center for the past 2 years. St. Joseph's previously won the state tournament in 2005-2010 and several years before that as well. In Division C, Bishop Kelly High School won for the 12th straight year.
• In Kansas, Leawood Middle School successfully defended its state title from 2012, with California Trail Middle School, the 2006-2011 champion, finishing 2nd place for the 2nd year in a row. All Saints Catholic School finished third. For Division C, Olathe North High School also defended its state title from 2012, with St. James Academy the state runner-up for the 3rd straight year. Notably, both teams scored fewer than 80 points on a full slate of 23 events - Olathe North with 68 and St. James with 78. Manhattan High School moved into the 3rd place spot.
• In Missouri, Ladue Middle School won B and Ladue Horton Watkins High School won C, while Pembroke Hill Middle School was runner-up in B and Pembroke Hill High School was runner-up in C. Both Ladues and both Pembrokes have attended nationals every year since 2009. Lexington Middle School finished 3rd in B and John Burroughs School finished 3rd in C, 8 points away from qualifying for nationals.
• Teams from Merrimack High School finished 1st and 2nd at the New Hampshire tournament. This will be Merrimack's 5th consecutive year attending nationals.
• Last but not least, in Tennessee, Bearden Middle School won Division B after a 2-year drought, followed by last year's champion Cedar Springs Homeschool in 2nd and St. Rose Catholic School in 3rd. For Division C, Montgomery Bell Academy won for the 4th straight time, followed by White Station High School in the runner-up position again and Ravenwood High School in 3rd.

A flurry of tournaments happened once again this past weekend, with Northern California B/C, New York B, Oregon B/C, Utah B/C, Washington B/C, and Wisconsin C holding their state championships. Here is a summary of the outcomes:

• In Northern California, Winston Churchill Middle School (4th place at nationals last year) maintained its grip on the state title, with John F. Kennedy Middle School moving up from 9th last year to claim 2nd and Elkhorn Middle School slipping from 2nd last year to finish 3rd. In Division C, Mira Loma High School's 8-year reign ended as Palo Alto High School edged them out by 1 point to qualify for nationals. Sheldon High School came in 3rd for the 2nd year in a row.
• In New York, Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School reclaimed the state title after falling to Eagle Hill Middle School for the past 2 years. Eagle Hill came in 2nd. Gelinas and Eagle Hill have represented New York at nationals every year from 2008 to the present. R.C. Murphy Junior High School finished 3rd.
• In Utah, Fairfield Junior High School extended its winning streak to 15 years, followed by Orion Junior High School in 2nd and Centennial Junior High School in 3rd. At the high school level, Davis High School won for the 1st time since 2010, followed by West High School in 2nd and Copper Hills High School in a close 3rd. Last year's champion, Utah County Academy of Sciences, finished 4th.
• In Washington, Canyon Park Junior High School won the state tournament after finishing 2nd to ExCEL Homeschoolers Academic League for 5 of the past 6 years. Canyon Park finished 5th place at nationals the last time they qualified, in 2007. This year, Frontier Middle School finished 2nd and Liberty Middle School finished 3rd. ExCEL got 5th place. In Division C, Camas High School won for the 3rd straight year, followed closely by Bothell High School in 2nd and Mountain View High School in 3rd. Union High School, which qualified for nationals last year after finishing 2nd at state, fell to 6th place this year.
• Finally, in Wisconsin, Madison West High School won for the 2nd straight year. Menomonie finished 2nd once again, followed by Marshfield High School in 3rd.
