According to the rules of Helicopters for NJ States, we must have a wooden disk on top of the heli, and that if it falls off, the run is over.

That is the national rule, applying to every state and regional tournament. What's your question about it?

They have this rule so that a "spike," or a device that can be used to jam the helicopter in the ceiling can't be used. This has been discussed before. Go here

On a related note, can this disk be physically attached to the helicopter (i and the regionals jugde thought so, but the towers judge thought that the disk was not attached- thus penalizing unstable helicopters).
Anyone know definitively.

Interesting interpretation, and I can see how the exact wording could lead to it. Unofficially of course the intent was to physically attach it.

Yea, it can be physically attached to the heli (and I think it
has to be, if you want any chance of it staying on during a flight).

Since something falling off stops the time, I'd say it would be wise to attach it firmly to the helicopter!!

Jeff: The key is the exact wording we used: "must be placed on the upper most part". Some event supervisors are interpreting that to mean not ATTACHED, but PLACED without attachment. I can see how the line of thought would go, although obviously that's not what we intended.

Since this isn't the place for clarifications, sounds like someone needs to submit a clarification question!
