What types of weights are people using and where did you find them?

Our coach has everything (like, EVERYTHING) in his lab. So we get to use metal pieces, plastic junk, anything we can find to stick together and make a weight. Or he just gives us an actual weight, but we don't worry about it all that much...yeah.

She's right. Most of your device should be able to be built with household materials. Some of the more fortunate teams may use specific things (like lab weights), but most other teams will be able to compete on the same level using basic materials. Don't fret these things too much (unless the rules say something about it).

You might be interested in the following document on the official Storm the Castle webpage that describes an easy way to build counterweights for that event: http://soinc.org/sites/default/files/Ho ... weight.doc

We are thinking about a big tupperware box/container full of coins (pennies). We can keep adding more weight until whatever system we design cannot handle it anymore.

I would think any convenient point.. why do you ask? All that matters is the total net distance it travels..
