Weighting ACL and AP classes

Hello everyone!

For those who don't know me, which I assume is everyone, I'm an 11th grade student from Levittown, NY. I currently go to Division Avenue High School and am in 11th grade. Last week, my friend and I went to our Board of Education to discuss the possibility of weighting ACL and AP classes differently from normal courses. Currently AP classes are weighted at 1.075 and ACL are not. I was just wondering how other schools and school districts weighted their classes. Also, if you could mention if your district ranks students etc. that would be awesome. The more info. the better.

Hi. I'm a freshman (debatable) student and i go to Hicksville HS.
At our school regular is weighted 1.00
honors 1.05
AP 1.1
Never heard of ACL and we don't have IB.

really? all the clases are weighted the same here but when it comes to GPA

Yeah, for Valparaiso HS, in NW Indiana...

AP and IB courses are weighted 1 point higher. So rather than a 4.0 A you get a 5.0 A. And yeah, we rank kids. The system is such that AP classes give an absolutely ridiculous advantage to taking the AP/IB classes. To the point that the top 10% of the class graduated with over a 4.0 GPA I believe.

We have no weighting. That is how special education students are able to be our valedictorians, while people who get Bs in some upper level course are thrust into the bottom of the "top 25%". Heck, there was a guy last year who was taking college classes as a senior and got a B in Organic Chemistry costing him valedictorian status. Yep, anyone who has all As gets #1 class ranking and it falls out from there.

CP gets weighed the same as AP?? I dont like that. Wait.. what's the difference between CP and regular?? Here, CP is the regular, it's the lowest level class you can take. Anyway, here AP is a point higher than CP and Honors is a half point higher than CP. So if you got a B in an AP class it becomes an A and if you got a B in a honors class it becomes a B+

At my high school in Arcadia, CA we did not weigh our AP/honor classes. We also do not rank students.

CP = college prep
In GA CP is the lowest level class you can take it's just a phrase to sound cool, doesn't actually mean anything.
In CA we don't have the CP phrase, just the regular class.

And to address aphoticruby's problem yeah I know that with this system students who take normal classes and get A's will trump those who attempt AP classes and get B's but I've never had the situation where the valedictorian wasn't obviously the smartest (or one of the smartest) person in the school. Usually the valedictorian was a person who took all AP classes and managed to get all A's anyways so it all worked out in the end.

I dont know the exact numbers in my school, but getting a 90 in an AP class is definitely better than getting A+s in a regents class. It goes AP>Honors>Regents, but not every AP class has an honors, or vice versa.

We have Regents (which is the "standard" or "normal" class), Honors (which is the more advanced version of Regents), and AP (which are AP's...generally supplementary to Honors, but in some cases you can take AP instead of Regents/Honors. It used to be that both Regents and Honors got a 5% weight...but when they ranked the top in the school, freshman and sophomores always got the probably 17 out of the top 20 spots because they were getting good grades with weights in honors. Then there were the Juniors and Seniors taking AP's and getting lower grades but the same weights. This year they changed to 3% for Honors and 7% for AP, which should level things out.
