Does anyone actually know what the towers requirements will be next year? I can't find anything on towers for 2012, and it seemed appropriate to start this since I want to be able to build over the summer.

I don't think the requirements are available until next school year, as in, no one knows what the new specifications are until the official rule books are released.

I heard that too...although there's got to be a maximum or something and the scoring will be a big decision maker as well..lighter or taller?

I think you would just have to balance it between height, balance and weight held.

I'd prefer that though, so the same designs don't win every year.

If that were so, then you would want the shorter height, wouldn't you?

For example, a tower that is 50 cm and weighs 10 grams holds 15kg-->

15^2/((50+10)/2)--> score of 7.5
as opposed to a tower that is 40 cm and weighs 10 grams holds 15kg-->

15^2/((40+10)/2)--> score of 9

How about: score=mass held*height/10/weight? (* stands for multiply)

Therefor, a 10 gram tower that holds 15 kg that is 50 cm tall would be a score of 7.5

A 5 gram tower that holds 15 kg that is 50 cm tall would be a score of 15.
