Crazy things in Science Olympiada

Post by zonedabone »

Has anyone here had any crazy things happen in science olympiad? We usually pass the time that we're not studying with some crazy science distraction. For example, yesterday we soaked a tennis ball in acetone and lit it on fire. The result was a fun game of fire soccer that everyone could enjoy! Check it out!

Hate to be a killjoy, but that seems sorta unsafe and irresponsible.

Anyway, we never did any REALLY crazy stuff in Scio, but we always did a lot of fun stuff.

Actually, during one trip, my friend killed the Pope.

We were in the hotel, and at like midnight, my friend took the bible out of the table drawer in the room and he chucked it against the wall for no reason. A few hours later, the Pope died and it was all over the news, and he was like "OH MY GOD I KILLED THE POPE BY THROWING THE BIBLE".

Actually, the acetone burns at really low temperatures, so it doesn't light anything on fire. You can see in the video that we hit stuff a ton of times and even go under a computer cart and nothing is damaged. Also, once it goes out one of us picked it up and it wasn't hot at all. After a bit of research, I read that isopropyl alcohol burns at lower temperatures for longer, so We'll have to use that next time. Good thing it works, because it's just common rubbing alcohol that everyone has. :D

This actually happened today, we were testing bottle rockets and there was a slight wind toward where everybody was standing. My rocket happened to have large wings and when we fired it, it immediately went up about 12 ft and started to fly at my coach. luckily, he ducked and it missed his head. We would have been wearing goggles but we left them inside.

Also, the rocket was in the air about 0.8 seconds!

At our regionals last year a bottle rocket attempted to murder one of the judges. It was hilarious!

My partner and I were goofing off with phonetic bird calls last year for Ornithology, and our battle cry became the call of the Red-Eyed Vireo: "I will seize you and squeeze you! QUEESH!!!"

This year a kid (from my team *facepalm*) showed up to Forensics dressed like he was going to a funeral. He played Ultimate in those clothes. *DOUBLE FACEPALM*

We named our Sumobot 'The DOME-inator."

The Mousetrap vehicle guys from my school misread the rules, so I had to give them a pencil and they duct-taped it to their MtV on the spot. I told them if they won it was entirely because I gave them my pencil. (Of which I had thirty, because I am paranoid and bring a million pencils whenever I am taking a test. You should see me on PSAT day! )

Hmm, the craziest thing maybe is our team name. Last year we had to put a team flag with a school name on our Mission Possible (and raise it with a mousetrap) but our school had no flag or school colors. So he put a smiley face on it and I wrote Team Awesome underneath. The rest of the team liked the idea so much that the following year we became "TEAM AWESOME"!

At regional one person from my school took a football from another kid. He asked for it back but the kid ran off. About a third of my school chased after him. We were at a big college campus and it also had multiple buildings. Everybody was looking at us as we ran down the halls. He ran outside and we all split up and blocked as many doors as we could. We did this because it was raining out and because we knew he had an event in 20 minutes. He soon surrendered and we took the football back. That was the largest game I have ever played!

The football story somehow jogged my memory. Okay, NSCD Invitational. 2010. That's last year, guys. The fire alarm goes off near the end of the day. Turns out some smart, smart kid decided to go into a classroom and microwave a book. Yeah. I never did figure out which school s/he (okay, we know it was a guy) came from, but I guess it was none of my business. Still, I haven't had any more fails at a competition.
At practice, there's been a few things, but, unlike the OP, what happens at my practices stays there and doesn't end up on YT.

This video just says it all lol

Also at regionals one of the seniors had a gift card to the college where it was hosted (yeah, what college has gift cards?) so we spent $200 on candy and drinks and went back to the home room with my whole team and ate it all xD

Also... I may have tripped down the stairs one invite to get a medal and got a bloody nose... maybe...

ROFL

Are you the guy singing? Or the piano guy? Or the guitar player?

Lol nice.

Our regionals seem pretty tame. This one professor guy just gets up and makes the same speech every, about us all being science geniuses and that someone in the room is probably going to win a Nobel Prize one day, *sigh* Our announcer couldn't pronounce "Aquifier" or "Microbe." *double sigh*
