Movie Reviews!

Post by quizbowl »

I'm a huge movie fan, and I think it would be nice to have a place to review movies here. You can request movies to be reviewed, and also can review ones on your own. I'll start with something I saw last night:
The Social Network (2010)
Rating: 9.2/10
I really enjoyed this movie, however I felt it was lacking in a few places. The acting of the main males (Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield) was superb, but I felt the supporting cast could be a bit stronger. I did not enjoy how at the end of the movie, they have the "what happened to this guy after" thing that couldn't have just been hinted by an extra scene or two. Finally, as a fan of director David Fincher, I guess I just expected more from him. Overall, a great movie, I'd recommend it - it gets the Quizbowl seal of approval.

Is this just movies that are in theaters or can we do pretty much any movie we like that is fairly recent?

Thanks Idaho! I've been wanting to make this thread for a while - and now its reality! Brobo, it can be any movie - I might be reviewing Ben-Hur tomorrow.

In that case, I'll go ahead and write a review for my FAVORITE movie ever- Inception

Inception (2010)
Rating: 9.5/10
Inception is a breath of fresh air in a world where good movies are few. Just by watching you can tell that every aspect of the movie was made with meticulous detail. The special effects are breathtaking and dazzling and pure eye candy. Several scenes will make you ask how they did it. The plot is perfectly paced and not easily predicted. This is not a movie for those who want mindless entertainment- you have to pay attention to catch everything. The music deserves a rating of its own, however it can be summed in one word: "amazing". Watch the movie once, and then watch it again and pay attention to the music- did you notice what they did there with Non, Rein Je Re Reggete Rein? The only problem with this movie that I can find is the characters. Perfect casting, perfect acting, unique characteristics, yet the script misses that key point of making the audience connect with each character. The only two characters you can easily sympathize with are Cobb and Fischer.

Summery: Watch it twice, then watch it again. Each time you pick up on something else. The movie will play with your mind the whole time, and will leave you with that "Wow" feeling few movies leave you with anymore.

Time to review my favorite movie:

Jurassic Park (1993)
Rating: 9/10
Jurassic Park is great because of two things: the special effects and the music. But first the bad: The script is great, but character development is lacking- with the notable exception of Grant's changing attitude towards children. Despite this, you can identify with some of the characters, but like in Inception (which I think I may watch tonight for the second time), some characters come out pretty flat.
Now for the good: The main theme is one of the most beautiful songs ever written (and my ringtone). It brings about a sense of wonder that many movie lack. It brings a tear to my eye.
The special effects are probably the best in any movie until Avatar, which is in a completely different class, nearly being an animated film. They are integrated well, and their quality is only more amazing because they were pioneering new ground in computer animation. Terminator 2 and other movies in the 80's and 90's made significant strides, but Jurassic Park made the first photo-realistic effects, the quality of which has never been matched. Let me put it this way: in 2012 you saw what it would look like if a city collapsed, in Eragon you saw what a dragon might look like, and in The Dark Knight you saw what it would look like if a man had half of his face burned away, but in Jurassic Park you saw dinosaurs.

Just finished watching another movie! Don't you love being home sick :/
Avatar (2009)
Rating: 6/10
If you didn't know, one of my favorite movies was Dances with Wolves, directed by Kevin Costner. To me, the script felt like an exact copy of the 1990 classic, except with blue Navi people replacing the Sioux Indians. The characters seemed lacking in any real background or formation, and although the CGI was breathtaking, it made me feel like it was too advanced for its time. I saw it in 3-D (gotta love those glasses) but I might have seen a total of 5 3-D effects the entire movie - complete waste of time. I wanted to see more of Jake's past, but it only gave me glimpses, and I wanted to know more.
Besides that rant, it was a pretty good movie, but not one James Cameron's best, and not one I'd be so sure to recommend. Yes, I would, but don't blame me if you feel the urge to throw copyright infringement papers at Cameron.

For goodness sakes, the entire point of the ending was so it would leave you wondering about whether it was reality or just a dream. It would be pointless if you learned what happened.
