EWS First flights

I wonder how others go about with their very first flights. We just completed constructing our very first EWS plane, and did some glide with NO power in a gym. Every time the plane didn't even finish a complete circle before it touched the floor. The best is about 1/4 of a circle. We also found it performed worse if we glided it from overhead vs shoulder height. What is a reasonable glide before we can fly with some power?
