Scholarships for State Medals, Anyone?

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

Scholarships for State Medals, Anyone?

Post by hscmom »

Hi All,

I have been tasked with doing a little publicity for our team. I am having little luck coming up with a list of colleges/universities that offer scholarships for Student Olympians that get medals at their state competition. So, is there a list like that somewhere?

Thanks!

I'm not sure there is a list, you would almost have to go through each state website and see if they say anything about it on there. I know that any scholarships given away for Science Olympiad in TX are the ones that are nationally sponsored, and I am pretty sure that most of the colleges in TX don't offer scholarships for medals.

Typically the only scholarships given away are the ones by the school hosting nationals, but it is possible that a state medal may at least help you with getting into or getting a scholarship for college. I'd contact the schools you are interested in and ask if they have any special offers for Science Olympiad medal winners.

In Nebraska, if you win first in an event at state, you get a small scholarship to a specific cluster of programs within UNL.

Most states don't support major scholarships, though some of the harder state events do give _small_ scholarships for 1st place. If you really want a scholarship, try and get to nationals and get 1st-2nd place. You can get several thousand dollars in scholarship, program, or kit money. It's something to try and obtain.

Texas State doesn't usually give out scholarships to competitors but i think if you win 1st you get a small scholarship for NATs transport.
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

Some of the events that are sponsored by companies/organizations (the American Egg Foundation or something like that sponsored Scrambler and Egg-o-naut a few years ago) award prizes/money for first place finishes at PA States, but no scholarships, I think. I wish...it'd be nice to have something more to show off for a first place finish than just a shiny medal.

I wouldn't call it a scholarship, its more to help teams pay for the trip then to help students pay for school.
