Dear Science Olympiad community,

The BirdSO team is excited to announce our 2nd ever season of invitationals! We will be hosting two separate tournaments, which will take place on December 11th-18th (miniSO) and February 12th-19th (Satellite)! BirdSO will be hosted under the Southern California Science Olympiad organization; all profits will be used to fund the 2022 Science Olympiad National Tournament at CalTech.

Registration will open on September 17th at 3 PM PT for both tournaments. Teams may attend both tournaments. The team cap will be 150 teams in both divisions in both the miniSO and Satellite competitions. Teams will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Schools may send a maximum of 4 teams per division. The cost is $65/team; schools may also apply for a fee waiver if they are unable to pay due to financial burdens.

We will run 23 events, including replacements, in both the miniSO and Satellite competitions, in addition to trial events. We would also like to announce the Computer Science Initiative, coming to the 2022 Satellite Invitational! Our goal is to promote computer science to the wider Science Olympiad community—six computer science events, ranging from machine learning to cybersecurity, will be run alongside the main and trial events but will not count towards the final score.

Custom medals will be given to the top 15 teams in each event and trophies will be given to the top 15 schools. Certificates will be given to the top 30 teams in each event, and participation certificates will be given to all students.

As with last year, we are looking for experienced event supervisors to volunteer at our tournaments. Applications will open on September 17th at 3 PM PT.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected] or the 2022 BirdSO Invitational forums thread. Future updates will be posted at bit.ly/birdso-updates-2022.

Sincerely,
BirdSO Tournament Directors

Will the test writing be open for high school and/or college writers with qualifications, or will it be limited to others?

Hi all,

Registration for the BirdSO Invitationals will begin today, at 3PM PT/6PM ET; registration concludes on December 7th, 2021 at 11:59 PM PT for the mini tournament and February 8th, 2022 at 11:59 PM PT for the Satellite tournament. The registration fee is $65 per team, but if you are unable to compete because of the cost, we can waive the fee on a case-by-case basis. Your school may register at most 4 teams at each tournament, regardless of division. We will be accepting up to 150 teams in each division at both tournaments. The tournament timeline can be found here.

The mini tournament will take place from December 11th to December 18th, 2021. We will be running 20 official events and 4 trials in each division, with replacement events such as Game On B, Cybersecurity C, and Write It CAD It B/C that will count towards the overall team ranking. Our event slate can be found here. The registration link can be found here.

The Satellite tournament will take place from February 12th to February 19th, 2022. We will be running 22 official events, 5 trials, and 5 Computer Science events, where the trial and Computer Science events will not count towards the overall team ranking. All build events will be counted towards the overall score with the exception of Ping Pong Parachute, which will be a trial event. Our event slate can be found here. The registration link can be found here.

Finally, event supervisor applications will begin today, at 3PM PT/6PM ET as well. If you are interested in volunteering, please apply here. We are looking for alumni test writers for Division B/C and may allow experienced high school competitors to write for Division B.

Hello BirdSO folks!

I don't see any information in the event doc for PPP and Bridge. Are these events held by video recording or by Video calling? Also, Is the time schedule for the theory events released yet?
Looking forward to it...

Thank you :)
