I've asked about this before, DS mentioned he would "think about it", if you want to back up my request, please put it in the 2011 site discussion thread.

Just make them smaller. I believe that changing the resolution also lowers the file size. I normally just mess around in Publisher until I get one right.

Resize using sommat like paint.
Save it in different formats (jpeg/gif are generally smallest)

Also, you could just search with the criteria being 75 X 75 on Google Images. That's what got me this nice avatar.

Yes- sometimes you stumble upon one that works beautifully- the one I have now, I believe, is 74x75 and just under 6 Kb. But if you can't find one that size in what you're looking for, take a larger one, resize it, change the file type and resolution, and just mess around with it, and you'll get it there.

Hi I'm a new member and this is my first post.
But as I was choosing an avatar, I noticed the avatar size was drastically smaller than most forums I've been on. Originally I wanted to use a GIF animation, but I found that impossible, so I found a nice picture of a hedgehog, because I like hedgehogs

.
Anyways, this forums does look nice and organized because of that, with everyone's avatars being the same. I've been on some forums where huge GIF animations with over 300x300 have been allowed to be used as avatars, it just makes the forums look nicer and pages easier to load I guess.
SATURDAY EDIT: Whoops, I meant hamsters not hedgehog, I don't know why I got them mixed up.

I think the smaller avatar size makes the site look more professional.
