Dear Students, Coaches, Mentors, Parents, Grads,

You are invited to participate in a Wright Stuff event at the AMA Nationals, US Indoor Championship, in Johnson City, TN on May 28 and 29, 2010. Whether you are a competitive or fun flyer, come and join your fellow Wright Stuff flyers and coaches from around the country and give Wright Stuff a great send-off. You will learn a thing or two. You will have a blast. You will meet many others who share in your interest for Wright Stuff.

You will compete in a premier flying site that annually holds the AMA Nationals, US Indoor Championship. The ceiling height is 120'. The competition will be serious, but in a fun and casual atmosphere. Bring your current plane. Or if you are daring, build a new one more suited for high ceilings.

Come and meet those who have participated in this forum. It will be good to put a face to the words.

Perhaps you are a passionate Wright Stuff flyer but your team did not make to the States or to the Nationals. This is your chance to continue your flying.

Perhaps you are a coach, mentor, or parent who has caught the Wright Stuff bug and have not only enjoyed coaching your students but also enjoyed building and flying your own planes. Come and join those who also share this passion.

Perhaps you are the State champion, or the National champion. Come and compete against those Wright Stuff flyers who might give you even stiffer competition.

Perhaps you are interested in continuing your indoor flying to the next level. Come and learn from the best. You will meet the best indoor flyers from around the country -- people who are US and World Champions. People who have been flying indoor models for 50 years but also those who are beginners.

You may also want to build a pennyplane or F1L EZB and compete in other events. If you have the will, you can do it. All experts were beginners at one time.

This invitation goes to all Wright Stuff participants, students, coaches, mentors, and parents. It is all of you who have made Wright Stuff the great event it has been over the years.

All Wright Stuff participants can sign up when they arrive. Both AMA and National Free Flight Society entry forms will be available. Joining the AMA is only $1.00 for Juniors, and NFFS charges $10.00 per event. Wright Stuff flying will take place over two days, on the mornings of May 28 and 29, 2010. But note that flying on May 29 is contingent on enough interest to fly an “open” event with unlimited rubber.

There are a couple of corrections to the original announcement:

I have already edited these changes to the original post.

Note that the main Wright Stuff competition takes place on the morning of May 28. May 29 is only if there is enough interest to fly with unlimited amounts of rubber motor. (Have you wondered how long your plane would fly on 2.5g of rubber?)

Please note that Wright Stuff flying is open to any and everyone.

The Wright Stuff event at the US Indoor Championship was flown Friday morning May 28, 2010. Here are the results:

Leo Pilachowski, Neal Henderson, John Hance flew custom designs. Elizabeth He and Yuan Kang Lee flew Freedom Flight models. Three of the competitors are from this forum. John Hance was flying in the 4:20s before his primary plane was damaged.

There was no bonus given for narrow wings.

Special recognition goes to Elizabeth He, who also flew a narrow wing Cezar Banks National model. Her best time was 4:14 for the narrow wing model. If the 40% national bonus was awarded, her time would have resulted in an amazing 5:55!

To all of the WS kids that are interested.

I uploaded a photo of the US Indoor Championships. Hopefully it will be added soon.
If you like WS, you may want to build something different you can fly there next year.
Penny Planes are the obvious choice since they weigh ~2.5g but you can also try F1D or one of the other classes.
Maybe we can get them to try the SO Helicopters.

Overall, this was an amazing place to fly.
It was also a great chance to meet some of the legends of indoor flying (like Ray Harland, Ben Saks, John Kagan, etc).

They are also looking for students to join the US National F1D team for 2012.
You need to build and fly and F1D at a National Competition (like USIC next year) and be under 18 in the summer of 2012.
