In rule 3.a.ii it says the "top and at least two vertical walls must be open or transparent for viewing all actions". I don't exactly understand what this means. Does this mean that any/all vertical walls have to be made out of a material like Plexiglas? What exactly does it mean by "open"?

That rule means that you need at least 2 sides and the top to be exposed or visible. You can do this by either leaving that space open to access, or you can cover it in plexiglas or another transparent material like you said. For example, many people have devices with 2 walls next to each other, so that the top and 2 sides are exposed to make it easy to adjust the device. Sciolyperson1's device is a good example of that design, and you can view it in The Best of 2017 Wiki page.

Each of the sides of the device are open so that the actions are viewable to the supervisor. Optionally, you could cover each of the sides of the device in acrylic, plexiglas, or a plastic sheet (see: Link, bottom of picture) which has a thin plastic sheet covering the side so that if a marble falls out, it's blocked by the plastic sheet.

For 2019 we had 2 walls solid (pegboard), 1 wall Plexiglas, 4th wall open (nothing). That way we had 3 walls to hang things on, and met the "2 walls open OR transparent rule.
