Are build events worth it this year?

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

Are build events worth it this year?

Post by Vortexx2 »

A majority of my scioly time is spent on build events, as I am usually in atleast 4 of them. But is it worth it to participate in them this year, or at the very least tryout for them? With most if not all of the tournament having switched to online tournaments, it is unlikely that I would actually be able to compete in them throughout the year. The only time I could see us competing in them is at regionals or state. So, would it be better to tryout for 4 build events and have limited participation in online invitationals, or to tryout for more study events?
8th grade events: Mission Possible and Hovercraft.
High School: Codebusters, Designer genes, Gravity Vehicle, Mission Possible, Machines, Ping Pong Parachute, Boomilever, Protein Modeling.

It's been a heck of a ride, vortexx out.

Well online invitationals will still have build events but they won't be as hands on.

I would suggest still mainly the events that you enjoy most (builds), but maybe throw in one or two study events so that you can participate more fully in some of your events and also just try something new and use this year as an opportunity to get outside your comfort zone.

I would hedge my bets and pick your favorite two builds and then a study or two so that you can do what you love and still compete if it's MiniSO. But if you enjoy those builds even beyond competing, I would just do what you love. Studying for something that makes you miserable might get you medals short term but is a waste of time in the long term.

Even though not as many people will participate, I suggest you do the events you like rather than stressing yourself out by doing events you hate. Scio is supposed to be fun, not something you should be forced to enjoy.
