How large is your SciOly team?

Post by Xenarian »

I go to a small-ish Catholic school, so my team is lucky to scrape together 12 people for our two invitationals. That's our entire team

How many invitationals per season do you guys go to? My team went to Loyola and Crystal Lake Central (both in IL).

How large/small is your competitor base? With the few people on my team, we have around five heavy-hitters for all of our events, as well as a bunch of smaller ones. I'm your man for physics/nature of science events.
My school has a single team (we all lump into a "varsity" team), and around 16 total people in the club.

We've got one full team of 15 competitors and 5 alternates from a relatively mid-sized school. We go to exactly zero invites, which might be because: a) The nearest invitationals for Div B are out-of-state, b) our team isn't dedicated enough to warrant funding for a bus and hotel rooms, and c) no one really wants to add to their stress level by going to an early competition- our Regionals are late March and we're usually panicking at the end to get everything done. Last year was a really successful year for us, but this year we've had people quit, some of us can't make Regionals, nothing's getting built, and basically there's a lot of unknowns.

I go to a high school of about 2000 kids. We went to 3 invitationals this year, but one was at our school. We managed about 30 kids this year. Despite having enough for 2 full teams, once we wittle people down to our final State team we still have some people who are only semi-committed to studying their butts off.
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

At our school of about 600 kids, we had about 18 try out for SO, and we went to three invitationals.

We are a small-ish independent school with about 200-300 kids. We normally have about 30 kids at the beginning of the year, and after 4 invitationals in which we have an A-team and a B-team, we cut that number to fifteen competetors. Anyone who went to the invitationals is welcome to be an alternate, but generally, only 3 to 4 people want to. Thus, we end the year with 18-19 students and two fantastic coaches. :D

This year we have 10 highly committed members (actually 12 but its 9 seniors and 3 juniors so two had to get the axe before Saturday's regional) and a handful of one and two event specialists for our A team. On B side (as we like to say), we have about 10-12 per week, so a total of 25 or so.

Granted, our school has about 1600 kids total, and we are a somewhat selective school at least by high school standards (about a 40% acceptance rate), so it seems reasonable that we can gather that many, but we are still dwarfed by a few of the local powers (i.e. Solon and Mentor) as far as team size goes.

The 10 mentioned above are pulling 4-5 content/lab events each and doing some of the building too, so basically we are the team (though my Astronomy partner is one of our specialists).

We have a 15 person Varsity team, and about a 15-20 person JV team. No alternates. Study and lab events are assigned, but we can challenge each other to building events. I was also at Crystal Lake and Loyola Invites.

I go to a medium-ish middle school of about 500 people per grade. This year we have 23 people on the team (a relatively high number for us-- last year it was 19). There are 4 ninth graders (only 4 tried out), 10 or more eighth graders (they make up the bulk of the team), and however many left 7th graders (9 or less). We have 18 competitors (due to new state regulations, 18 people are now allowed to compete, rather than the original 15) and 5 alternates. We only have about 7 (more or less) devoted people on the team ( :| ) and over half the team is composed of newbies.

We compete in no invitational tournaments, probably because we have no money, no time, and the closest invitational is out of state. We have Regionals in mid January and States in mid March (in 15 days). We have one person hitting 5 events (max), a few taking 4, and many taking 3 or less (mainly due to conflicts).

We have only one team in our school and we do...decently well. :|

Our school has a 'Green' (basically varsity) and 'Silver' (basically j.v.) team for Science Olympiad. Green team has 15 people (plus 2 or 3 for trial events once we're at state and, hopefully, nationals.) and Silver has whoever else is on the team, which varied from 10-20 people throughout the year so far. We separated the Green and Silver (which are our school colors, if it's not obvious) after our first few big invitationals. We had a practice test day at our school (which was basically a meet, but just among our team) at the beginning of the year to let people decide what events they really want to do and to get people paired up with partners. We've sent full teams to 2 invitationals so far, and we sent a half-team (about 8 people who have a lot of study events and wanted more practice) to 2 other ones. We're going to host our own small meet, as well, so that makes 5 real meets (and our practice one as sort of a sixth) before state.

We have about 14 people on our team, which actually is more than normal. A few of those were recent recruits though, since we only had like 10 before.
