Note that there will be 9 total rounds, and the score is a sum of your best two flights. Anjulie set new national youth senior records on her first two flights. Anjulie, Josiah, and Monet are my students from Albuquerque.

Quite different from SO. Lots of testing and refining between flights. Starting with balloons. 175' ceiling. Awesome experience!

What a finish. Monet finally got things working on the last flight, and posted a 20 minute one-touch flight, pulling into third place (one touch at Lakehurst! That was fun). Andrew launched in the last 5 minutes of the last round, needing an 18:56. With guidance from Kang, he pulled off a 19:31, taking third place back.

What a great event in a great venue. Thanks to John Kagan for putting on this pressure packed event.

Remind the forum (and me) the ceiling height at the team selection site (Lakehurst, NJ; hangar for the Hindenburg, I believe).

180 feet at peak height. It takes tremendous effort to get to the ceiling.


Something I wanted to point out: my rubber snapped midflight in Round 8, punching a hole in the motorstick, and ripping one of the prop blades off. I've never in my life seen that happen before. I guess that's what happens when you wind past 120%!

Do you have plans to find the additional 4 minutes per flight (or more) that it will likely take to win at the World Championships? Maybe you already have this much capability in the higher ceilings at the salt mine.

My problem was that I wasn't acclimated to the temperature this weekend. I had the privilege of flying at Lakehurst a couple times before the tryouts, but they were in much warmer conditions (low 80s). I was able to get a 21:30 on Labor Day, but when Tryouts came around, I needed a thicker cross-section motor to accommodate for the decrease in temperature. I didn't truly realize this til around Round 6. That's when I started amping up the cross sections and getting higher times. The trim on the last flight wasn't as good as I wanted it to be; I hadn't done a test flight between Round 8 and Round 9, but I think the rubber snap had jacked up something, I'm not sure what, but it slightly nosed down instead of up; probably something with decelage. Getting the climb to not be flat was probably the greatest challenge. The most I was able to climb to was around 110 feet over the weekend, and I got a 19 minute flight. I'm thinking if I'm able to get to the ceiling, that 21+ is within reach again.

I'll try to get some more flights in next week at Lakehurst, and after that, I'll probably be doing quarter motors or something in my school gym. I'll keep flying at Lakehurst until the conditions become abysmal. I only live 2 hours away from lakehurst. I think I can pull something together, I just need the time!

I think what Chuck's kids were able to accomplish was spectacular, and I'm truly amazed at their performance. I look forward to seeing Josiah and Anjulie again in the salt mine.
