construction photos

Post by carneyf1d »

Here are some of my late night construction photos...for all of you who are new to indoor flight, it might help you out in Wright Stuff.

Here is my stab built for div B rules this year. The spars are both .110 and .100. The ribs are 5% simplex and exactly .075" by .100". I even made some sweet looking compression style ribs, just for looks :)
Best part about it is that it only weighs .5 grams :o . its actually reallllllly sturdy and a lot heavier than the min weight it could be built to. The next step is to cover it in polymicro and add these: http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos- ... 9_4108.jpg

Very nice!! A few questions - what do the numbers mean? i'm assuming they are the dimensions but what are they measured in? Does the leading edge of the stabilizer need to be higher than the trailing edge like the wing does or should it be flat? According to the draft rules the max rubber mass this year is 1.5g. if i remember correctly last year it was 2g. will that change pose any problems?

the numbers are all dimensions in inches. i use a bunch of micrometers to measure everything. they arent necessary but are helpful.
the stab edges are flat upon construction. once you trim the plane, the stab will have a negative incidence, and the TE will be slightly higher, yes.
the 1.5 gram change will cause a difference, but im workin all that out. im going to try to find a smaller and lighter prop, yet more variable pitch at launch torque. so thinner rubber band/more winds/more time.

so at 4 in the morning i finished the wing :) the compression ribs turned out fairly nicely. there really is absolutely no need for them, but it looks cool as all...and i have a few grams to spare so why not? I think the total weight came out to be around 1.2 grams for the wing. Everything is very sturdy and its built to last.

;) next come the tip plates and posts
after that i just have to roll some tubes and its done!

oh almost forgot the specs. wish i coulda weighed individual parts but i dont have my good scale with me at the moment. the best i have is a crappy .1 scale.
wing: 40 cm by 14.5 cm
3 compression ribs in the middle 6.25 % simplex... the plane is designed for low ceilings since my gym is only like 30 feet.
2 outer ribs same 6.25% regular camber
TE and LE are .110 by .100 are straight as an arrow :D
covered in polymicro. came out to 1.2 grams i think, and 1.6 grams for both stab/wing

does the simplex of the ribs depend on the height of the gym? also, is the wing covered in the picture? if it is then it's really hard to see and i get why they now have the opaque rule. although you probably would be able to see it even without a colored part.

i think the opaque rule is dumb. the wing and stab were just covered, and once you see the covering it makes the structure more visable because it reflects light wavelengths off of it, making it slightly colorful. ill post a pic of it covered in like 15 minutes.
as for simplex...higher simplex causes the plane to climb less, at least im 90% sure. i really havent had time to test it out in the gym, but i definitely will once i fly the new plane.
The construction photos are posted as im currently doing the project :) so once i finish covering the tip plates ill post new pics

next step is for the tip plates to be covered and assembled to the main wing. same for the stab
more to come

heres the finished wing. the left tip plate turned out a bit sloppy, and i had to make a patch in the polymicro, but it was only a small patch and no harm was done. im considering remaking it, since i wanted the model to be sort of flawless. oh well.
As for the 6 by 6 stupid opaque rule...ill put something in the middle of my wing posts, as its always what ive done the last second before competition :)
please leave some feedback on what you guys think about it. suggestions are always welcome, and id like to even improve upon this model in the future.
next step: motor stick and tail boom.
