hey just wondering what people thought of the whole 2012 doomsday thing. personaly, i think it's stupid and an excuse 4 ppl 2 sell books though i will prob c the movie...

I know this article is old, but NASA scientists have predicted a big storm in 2012, or even 2011, 2010.

This is what I find interesting... this year from july 11-aug 30 2009 the sun had no sunspots for 51 days!
(That almost broke the record of 52 days)

I've heard predictions that the solar storm combined with a possible weakening of the earth's magnetic field could have some adverse affects, but i think most of it is just a fluke.

Apparently the earth's magnetic poles are gonna flip and reverse.
earth does this every 750,000 years but wer're about 30,000 years overdue.
Still, I'm pretty skeptical about this. If we've been overdue for 30,000 years why would it suddenly reverse in 2012?

I think the whole 2012 thing is coincidence and thats just where the mayans were on the calender when the civilization ended and someone decided that meant they thought it would be the end of the world.

that's a magnetic reversal. it just happens as an effect of sea floor spreading or something

Technically, it's true that 12/12/12 will be the end of an era, but then depending on your definition of "era," it can just represent the transition between one day and another.

The reversing of the poles will occur somewhere in the next few thousand years, it will be gradual and not an overnight event, additionally it will only weaken the magnetic field, not destroy it, it will not cause a cataclysmic end to the earth. All it will mean is that we will need to be more careful about using sunscreen, oh and other places on earth will have the ability to see the northern lights.
