I noticed this thread wasn't up yet, so I figured I might as well start it, since I just got back from the first tournament in the nation, where I was running Mission.

In case anyone was interested, the top score was a little under 400 - the team had a roughly 15x15x8 box containing only the Start Task, which was bolstered by a mostly good ASL score. Of the 11 competing teams (out of 42 at the tournament), exactly 2 of them had more than one task prepared. In keeping with the conventional wisdom of consistency over more tasks, neither of them actually scored points for more than one of those, and touch penalties pushed both of them down quite a bit. Exactly one team attempted the final action, although they did not succeed, the fact that they had a final action at which to stop timing still raised their score slightly (since based on 4.f a team with no final action would presumably have their operation time continue to run up to 180 seconds). Had the two devices with a nontrivial number of scorable actions worked as intended, they likely would have scored in the range of 500-600 points.

Max points without timers or target time look like 1265 if I added correctly

The (obviously impossible) ideal score, for a target time of 120 seconds is 1625.0 points.

unless you utilize a diagonal of the box and not just a wall (one corner to the opposite corner of the box or something similar), it would be difficult to fit in the inclined plane task into a 15x15x15cm box. it has to go up 10cm with IMA of 2, so the horizontal length would have to be 17.32cm... I think the smallest box with everything in it, would at least have one dimension around or over 20cm. Just my thought though Hopefully, someone proves me wrong and makes it smaller!

well, I just entered 15 becuase its a number smaller than 30. 29x29x29 would have worked just as easily. Also, I did say it was impossible...

I tried to be conservative, I would not be surprised to see my predictions exceeded.

The first place is probably accurate, but I definitely see more than 5-6 devices getting more than 1400. (Even assuming a time goal of 100s).

Confused as to scoring of the timer. It must run for a minimum of 10 seconds, but to be scoreable it must run for 30 seconds? "The timer must run for 30 seconds to earn points". So anything between 10 and 30 seconds will not earn points??? Please help clarify

I agree this is slightly confusing. Anything running longer than 10 seconds will be considered a timer, and therefore cannot be electrically or spring powered per 3.i. This rule is a holdover from last year that is designed to prevent students from using the easiest options for delaying the run to reach the target time.

The points for your designated timer action occur at a rate of 1 point per second BEFORE the target time. Your timer must run for 30 seconds to earn any of these points. Thus, if it runs 29 seconds it earns no timing points. If it runs 31 seconds (before the target time) it earns 31 points.

Any idea what invitational scores will be like by December and early January in NY, PA, and NJ?
