Register for United States Earth Science Olympiad!

Post by boop314 »

Have you ever been like, "Wow I love Rocks and Minerals/Dynamic Planet but I'm sad because all my friends do USABO and USNCO and stuff and I'm like lol i like rocks?"

Well, I am here to tell you that you don't need to be sad anymore because... registration for the United States Earth Science Olympiad (USESO) is now open (until April 10, 2018)! You can register at useso.org. If you do well on the open exam, you can qualify for the camp (just like with every other science olympiad), which is held at the University of Vermont in late June. The camp is where the four people who will represent the USA at the International Earth Science Olympiad (2018 is in Thailand) are chosen.

If you're still not convinced, fun little factoid, there have been 7 people from the past two years' teams alone that have been accepted into Stanford. Just saying. Soooo consider giving it a shot! There are some resources/study guides available at useso.org as well.

Also spread the word to any friends who might be interested!

Good luck :)

But unlike the other Olympiads, don't you have to pay for the camp?

This is indeed true due to the fact that unlike the other olympiads, USESO is currently not sponsored by any organization/corporate entity. However, I would say it is well worth the cost! There are also need-based subsidies/scholarships available.

The open exam is honestly pretty trivial. If you've taken a basic earth science course or read an introductory textbook before, you should fly through it. Based on your stats, I think you would do quite well, both on the open exam and at camp! Just give it a shot, you never know!!

During the entrance exam, are you given the Earth Science reference table?
