The statistic for number of registered user online is for users who are signed in and browsing the forums at that instant. Many others browse other parts of the site, browse the site while not signed in or at other times of day. On average we have over a thousand users visiting the forums each day.

Some of us turn off the function that lets other people see when we're online.

Looking at threads in 2008-2010, I think the forums aren't any less active, it's just people on here are less likely to post (which may constitute less activity, actually). I mean, their posts would lack capital letters, punctuation, and in general seem low effort.
