Why are skirts used on hovercrafts and what is the most commonly used material used in their construction?

They trap air underneath the craft for the air cushion to be retained. Most commonly used material: nylon?

2. What key feature an SES possess that distinguishes it from a hovercraft?

1.) Surface-Effect Ship
2.) Has twin-hulls similar to that of a cataraman allowing it to be more resistant to slipping perpendicular to the direction of movement and can use water jets for propulsion do to its partial submergement in the fluid
