Re: Elevated Bridge 2009
You need to realize that these were not just local teams, they are powerhouses from as far as 6 hours away, from 4 different States. I would not be surprised if the average of the top 6 at this invitational surpasses the average of the top 6 at the Ohio State competition... in both B and C.

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009
Northern Colorado Regionals yesterday,
I didn't too well. First woodwork I've ever built - 40ish grams, 14.1kg's held. Some torque ripped it apart in a spectacular fashion.
The top team had just over 1000 efficiency, and was using an A-frame design. The weight was 14.8 grams and I'm guessing it still had some room for shaving as it still looked pretty dang good with all the 15kg's on it.
For State, I'm currently debating between an arch or A-frame (though I haven't been impressed by any archs yet).
Edit: Balsa Man, are you the one that built it? If so, great job.

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009
I'm not even in this event, but I was looking at scores from Indiana regionals and found this excel file from St. Joe's regionals with raw scores. It seemed interesting.

I won 1st place in Region 8 of Michigan with only 768 percent efficiency. I guess I was lucky the other people were not you guys.

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009
It was my son, Peter, who built it; I'm a parent- second year volunteering as coach. Yeah, he did a great job- he'll appreciate the congrats. As I noted in a previous post, your take that it has room to come down is quite correct. I'll leave my statement of "a few grams", and we'll know in a week or so just how many. Peter and his partner have another ready for some testing.Thequestionmark wrote:The top team had just over 1000 efficiency, and was using an A-frame design. Having started working with my older son in '99, been through 10 balsa events, bridges, booms, and towers; its sort of become the family event. Its been a great learning experience. Peter's 2006 bridge has been the highlight to-date; won State with a 2485, which best I could tell would have medaled at Nats (the Team missed making Nats). What he learned from it was a good head start this year. I'll try to get a picture up, oh, a little before State; there are some interesting things to share about it. More than glad to share;believe that....part of what Science-O and this board is all about. Doing it in a way and at a time that doesn't help the competition too much, is, of course understandable. I think State is going to be quite competitive- hope to hear some numbers from Southern Colorado Regionals- that would make it more fun for all of us in the run up to State...

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009
I posted the picture for 24Hrs. in a comment on page 61. Unfortunately if you didnt get to see it then oops too bad. However dont feel bad i made a game out of it and was only going to share with the winner of the game some of the key changes that had to be made that would make it almost twice as good from what was shown. unfortunately im not making anyones life that easy good sir.
