The author's chief method of developing the couple's relationship is their use of a condescending tone which connotates the expectation that the woman follows the man in the relationship. The tone of the passage develops a major rift between the husband and wife. The woman, who wants to be lively and live life extravagantly, as shown by her 'surprise' to her husband, is clearly juxtaposed by her husband who shows no interest in the extravagancies of life, as shown by his apparent outrage toward his wife. While the condescending tone of the passage is more directed at the man from the narrator, it proves more that the woman is in the wrong than the man based on societal expectations. At the time this passage was written, 1946, women were still largely viewed as objects to be seen and not heard. This condescending tone that the narrator scolds the man provides a lens to view the relationship through both sides, and based on the gender roles of the 1940's the man had more of a reason to be angry at his wife than the wife had to be sad. Because of these gender roles, evidenced by the condescending tone, the wife would be seen to be in the wrong more commonly than the man. Because of this lens, it is possible to see through the bias of the narrator and understand that there is some level of validity to the husband's outrage and that this relationship is not as one-dimensional as presented.
