Hm- The scores at Princeton were much more bunched for placing scores... I thought MI pre-regionals had 2800/2600 towers? I understand MIT max was around 2800 and 6th was 2400. Still seems pretty amazing that someone can make a 6 gram tower with bonus or 5.3 gram maxing nonbonus :|

My bad, should have been more descriptive. This was Div C as well. The first place tower held all at 8.4g non bonus, but I have a suspicion that they had used the same tower before...

I personally dont know of a team in Michigan that has scored that high yet. Northville has not showed their A team yet in our region, so who knows. Will see the scores this weekend at Frankenmuth, looks to have much stronger teams,

This may be a bit late to help some students but this short vid shows some of the basic elements of the towers and their purposes.
https://youtu.be/Uv0G4OwRWCw

There are essentially three different elements in a tower: the legs, the horizontal truss and the diagonal truss. Which elements are in compression and which are in tension? Do compression elements or tension elements need to be thicker? And which elements will eliminate bulging/bowing and which elements reduce torquing? Building a straw tower, a builder can add and remove each element and get answers to these questions. Engineers would create computer simulation models but a straw model works just as well.
