We still got 8th.
Hehe, i remember that question. My partner made up something about the oscillation of the earth's axis, but I really wanted to put that it was because of the Cold War. When we walked out, i heard a couple of other teams say that they actually did put the Cold War =)
It did cross my mind to write that but I didn't see how it would work and we were strapped for time.

I looked it up, I guess it was because of all the aerosols being used then. Aerosols, for those who haven't had any meteorology experience, are just minute particles suspended in the air. Because there was so much of them it affected the albedo of the planet, which caused more sunlight to be reflected back into space, thus cooling the planet. Which makes sense when you think of it. Just wish I had thought of it during the test, but oh well.

Yeah, but CFCs also have a major warming capacity as a greenhouse gas.

Only if the sunlight can get through in the first place- which some of it can't if the concentration is too high to begin with.

CFC's aren't the only aerosols, if I through up a bunch of sand into the air it would be an aerosol

I was doing the 2008 National Reach for the Stars event for practice.
The question was "Which star, Vega or Arcturus, has a higher surface temperature?"
My partner, who did that question, put "Yes"
