do we have to attach the paper cup using the masking tape. are we allowed to have hooks prebuilts into our egg drop and then attach the cup via the hooks?

It may be unstable, but I don't see anything against it.

Rotor Egg Drop Condensor Paper

Post by balasg »

Hi Guys,
A friend and I are doing Rotor Egg Drop this year. Our teacher would not order us the kit, but got us condenser paper. It is a lot more fragile than I expected.

How am I supposed to use it? I know it is for the wings, but how do I make it work?

Thank you,
GB

Has anyone really thought about using a device attached to their rotor so they can hold it farther away from the wall? (as in by the edge of the device, not the center.) Because I have seen countless devices drift a little towards the wall, hit it, go unstable, and plummet to the ground.

our most recent devices have been getting times between 3.6-4.8 seconds. these are mostly prototypes, as in builkt from inferior materials and one was slightly oversized. (I should not be in metric mastery  .) but remember that with higher drag comes lower stability ;)

I am thinking that if you are going to quote time, I would want to see the accompanied height along with the quoted time, otherwise, it does not mean much.

Rule 2.a says you can only bring the helicopter egg drop device, and no other tools or equipment is allowed. If the said device drop along with the helicopter, then maybe it would be legal. But then again, you might be adding a lot of weight just to try to get away from the wall. A better strategy might be to make the device more stable with 2 rotors or more rotating in opposite directions to balance the torque.

Look for any instruction for wrightstuff construction, there should be instruction on how to cover the wings. Depending on how you make your rotor, it should be similar. You may need to roll the rotor surface on top of the tissue as you try to get the all the edges to be glued to the paper.

One caution with condenser paper, it tends to shrink a lot with changes in humidity warping the lightweight frames its used on.

You can reduce this by laying your paper out on a towel on a flat surface. Spritz with water and let dry. Repeate a couple of times. When done it will be very wrinkly. Iron it mostly flat. You will probably not get it completely flat, don't worry.

When you go to install it on your rotor frame, make sure you do it in a very dry room, on a dry day. Maybe iron again just before installing and do it under a warmish lamp. The idea is to have it in the maximum shrink condition so with changes in humidity it only grows, not warping your frame.

See also back up this string about loose coverings and some Event Supervisors calling this a parachute.

Oh, an alternate way to apply glue. Using a glue stick can be tricking on a real light frame without breaking the frame, even more difficult with a twisted frame like for a rotor. Instead lightly spray the top surface with spray glue like 3M 77. And I mean light, if you can tell the glue is there you probably put too much.

Hi Jeff,

Do you have any tip with grocery bag covering? Do you use solder iron to cut the edges like film or do you just cut it with a knife? I am going to have to move away from film, film is way too expensive for this event and probably overkill.
