Oh, New York seems incredibly competitive to me. Can't wait for states! My first year, I'm going as an alternate.

The WI states are also fairly competitive. In the past five years (outside of 2011) the state score have always been decided by around 10 points. The two years I made nationals (2010 and 2012) we won off a tie breaker and by three points respectively

AL's Div B first and second place team this year were separated by 3 points. Not saying that AL's competitive, but maybe we're a bit more competitive than most people give us credit for.

Just saying, Maryland's first and second teams in BOTH B and C divisions were separated by ONE point.

New York and Ohio certainly are highly competitive with multiple teams having made Nationals and placing in top 10.
However, if you only look at closeness of scores that determine who go to Nationals, Wisconsin has to be way up there. The old scoring system utilized up until 2008 didn't really allow for a blowout and since, it's been very close.

2008: A questionable DQ caused a team to lose by 8pts when it would've won by 3.
2009: Scores aren't online anymore but top 2 teams combined to miss medals in a total of 2 events?
2010: Tied score with tie-breaker being # of golds
2011: An unexplained tier 2 in an event and a couple of building events with "home field advantage" or else scores would've been just about tied again
2012: 3 point differential.

I doubt the competition has been that close in any other state in recent years.

Ohio C will be interesting this year. Solon should win it all unless they really slack off, but Centerville, Mentor, and Chardon were all on pretty much the same level at regionals/WLS invitational time. Can't wait to see how that plays out.

Not that Wisconsin isn't competitive, but Kansas is probably about the same level. When I was a freshman, I think my school missed second by two points - which would have gotten us nats. That happened to another school in division B, too, at some point.

EDIT: Actually, I checked the scores from that year - we missed second by six points. The year before, we missed first by two.

Either way, it's competitive here.

I figure there should be six to seven teams in the mix at Kansas, all with the potential to win state. (Some with better odds in my mind than others, but you never know what can happen- East proved that last year.) Anyone's game is right- should be fun.
