(that's the impression I got from reading the rules, but I just wanted to confirm)

I find it hard to believe that ID will be based solely on leaves, but that might be the case.

The Rules wrote:3c. Leaf specimens may be live or preserved depending on availability and may be accompanied by twigs, cones, seeds, or other parts of the tree.
So it looks like it'll be leaf-based, but there will be other parts of the tree as well (though from what I understand, that will just be accompanying the leaf).

So I guess it's still worth it to study other parts of the tree not just the leaf right?

If you wanted to be able to double-check your identification, I would assume so - but anyway, it's better to know too much than too little. :)

The leaf rule makes the event even more limited than birds was (at least you could have males, female, juvenile, breeding plumage, feathers).

Also looks like the test writers will have to go out and collect samples as opposed to providing pictures.
ornithology, forestry, entomology, triple E, green generation, water quality, dynamic planet (lakes & rivers), awesome aquifers, meteorology, robot arm, write it do it. :)
A cone of depression occurs when you drop your scoop of ice cream on the ground on a hot summer day.

Hello, I'm doing Foresty. I live in Pennsylvania. Does anyone know where I can get the state list? I tried the science olympiad website and it wasn't on there.

If it's not on your state website, then they probably haven't put it up yet.
