I was talking more about a system to translate signals from your input device into signals for your motor drivers. Like a Vex system. This is especially relevant if your motors don't have the drivers and servomechanism built in.

How are people obtaining motors with enough torque to lift such large arm? Currently, that is my biggest problem.

If your motor does not provide adequate torque, you can user gears to increase it. If you attach a gear with radius r1 to the shaft of the motor, then have a gear with radius r2 om a separate axle engaging the first gear, then torque around the second axle = torque of the motor *(r2/r1). So, the larger r2/r1, the larger the generated torque. This approach, however, has a side effect. The rotational speed of the second axle decreases by the same ratio.

Quick question about the rules for Robot Arm.

Are we allowed to have a wired remote to control the Robot Arm? Or must the remote be wireless?

i just know that we are using servos for everything (metal geared high torque, standard, and possibly micro) except the bottom platform which will be controlled by a motor with a gear box including a worm gear and I am using a 2.4 6ch radio. Our team (really me, as i do most of the building and electronic stuff :lol: ) fabs all our parts for everything except the stuff you can't buy (like transmissions). Our sumo bot last year had only electronics and one rc car transmission that was bought, the rest was fabricated out of aluminum from the hardware store and a bandsaw.

I'm a little unclear on this: Can the robot be pre-pogrammed, or does it have to be controlled by a competitor in real time?

That's a very interesting question. I'd think general rule #2 applies, but you should probably submit an official clarification request.
